Ed Helms signs on to ‘Naked Gun’ reboot
ed-helms-naked-gun.jpg

It’s been more than two decades since Leslie Nielsen started splitting sides in the Naked Gun franchise as the absurd Detective Frank Drebin. Now, we’re getting a reboot, and The Hangover’s Ed Helms will be his replacement.

Yes, I’m serious—and don’t call me Shirley.

Paramount has tapped Reno 911 and Night at the Museum writing duo R. Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon to pen the Naked Gun reboot as a new spin on the Drebin character. Most recently, the pair wrapped a Baywatch script.

The studio first released The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988 as an absurdist take on the procedural police and became a near-instant classic. The followups, Naked Gun 2 1/2 and Naked Gun 33 1/3, were less well received, but the series in total garnered some $275 million.

Which is to say, a remake was only a matter of time. But in Helms, Paramount has found someone not only similar in physicality to Nielsen, but comparable in tone and delivery. So long as that absurdist style still resonates with today’s audiences like it did in the 90s, this may be a remake to only worry about marginally.

After all, with a history going back to 1982’s Police Squad! spoof series—arguably the progeny of shows like Reno 911!Naked Gun is a comedy culture giant. Doing it justice won’t be easy.

Now if we only knew who will be playing Nordberg. Justice for that character ought to be a little easier.

i just get negative no matter who they would cast or whatever script they have

but to be fair things like 21 jump street turned out amazing but thats only because it went from a drama show to a comedy and was its own thing and didn't involve the original characters as the protagonists...i'll give it a fair chance though

Who gets to be Nordberg RG3?

:usure: Helms is not even funny to begin with . :trash:

Hes funny to me I guess, he was akward funny in the first 2 hangovers(3rd one underused him and Cooper) he was mad funny as the scumbag weasel in We Are the Millers too.

He will be funny if they make this just like the originals and dont parody the shyt up like that awful Get Smart shyt. The original took itself serious while still being completely stupid:heh:

The naked gun is classic because of Leslie Nielsen. Helms can't embody the frank drebin character like that but I guess we will see how well he does. Helms for some reason doesn't have the leading star power he's more of a sidekick.

Nobody can replace Leslie Nielson. His uncanny ability to play oblivious to shyt will forever be unmatch.

FOH outta here wit dis garbage. :camby:

Thats true...so true:wow:

If they are getting Helms to be a clone of Leslie Nielsen this is gonna fail but if he is doing his own spin on the character without over doing it then it could be watchable
