Not only is Eddie George making an impact at Tennessee State as a football coach, he also is influencing another sport.

On George's recommendation, Music City Baseball has signed a memorandum of agreement to explore the possibility of building a stadium on TSU's campus in hopes of luring a major league club to Nashville.

George, a former Tennessee Titans All-Pro running back, served as a Music City Baseball board member and chair of the real estate advisory committee, even before becoming TSU's coach.

"Eddie has been my partner as the real estate advisor as long as we've been evaluating sites, and when Eddie made his commitment (to be TSU's football coach) and TSU made its' commitment to Eddie, it just really opened our eyes and made the connection obvious," Music City Baseball executive director John Loar told The Tennessean on Wednesday.

The connection is that Music City Baseball has built a platform on diversity, equity and inclusion. The organization has a connection with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and if it lands an expansion team will name it the Nashville Stars, which would make it the first MLB club named after a Negro League team.

Music City Baseball recently received an endorsement from the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce.

Music City Baseball has also explored building a stadium on the east bank of the Cumberland River near Nissan Stadium or at an undisclosed site in Williamson County.

Renderings of the Cumberland River site were unveiled in October 2019. The following September, Titans officials said they were was not interested in adding a baseball venue on its property, though Loar didn't rule out utilizing another site along the riverfront.

For the time being, however, the group is focused on Tennessee State.

"We've made this our top priority to evaluate this site, to see if it makes sense for everybody involved." Loar said. "We want to spend the next six months looking at this site with members of the community, with TSU, the mayor's office, the state and the bodies that govern Tennessee State University, which is the state building commission and all the other governing agencies connected with this."

Loar said the prospective stadium could also include expansion of TSU's student housing, along with research, development and educational opportunities in the school's agriculture department and the educational components connected to the performing arts community.

"The opportunity to preserve history by creating history is really important to us," Loar said. "The connection we have with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the fact that TSU is a historical black college and university led us to ask does this makes sense for the community, does it makes sense for TSU, does it make sense for us?"

The Board
History. Opportunity. Vision.

Link Glover is making a lot of inroads. Opening a lot of doors.

Probably the most powerful person in black higher education at the moment.

I’m bout sick of seeing her......in a good way. :lolbron:

The lady is definitely making moves.

Nashville is on the up and up and it definitely makes sense for TSU to take advantage of that.

I own property near Fisk and it is definitely appreciating handsomely. :ehh:

TSU, Fisk, and Meharry are on their way to rivaling the AUC in Atlanta.

I was about to say that she needs to come to Chicago and do some fundraising here because Fisk and TSU are considered “Chicago’s HBCUs” since they are the closest HBCU’s in the south for Chicagoans to get to. Large contingent of Fiskites and TSU alums here.

But then I remembered AKA is headquartered here and Glover is up here all the time since she’s also president..

If /when the OKOP series gets cancelled, we can go back to regular programming. Until then, I'm Team Boul-ette. Hehehehe

Institutions will flourish or fall based on leadership. TSU, NC A&T, Morgan State, and a handful of other schools have risen because of exceptional leaders.
