A 12-year-old boy in a stolen car was killed in a shootout after the car's owner used an app to track down his vehicle, Denver police said.

The owner on Sunday told authorities his car was taken from the 8300 block of East Northfield Boulevard, according to a news release from the police department.

Using an app, he learned the car was in the area of West 12th Avenue and North Decatur Street, which is nearly 10 miles from the address where he said the vehicle was stolen.

After approaching the car, the owner "was involved in an exchange of gunfire with occupant(s) in the stolen vehicle," police said, without disclosing how many people were in the vehicle or who fired the first shot.

The boy drove the car to the 2900 block of West 10th Avenue, and officers found him with a gunshot wound, according to police. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified the boy as Elias Armstrong. An autopsy found the cause of death was from a gunshot wound. The manner of death was homicide.

The others in the stolen vehicle were gone before police arrived and have not been found, the release said.

The car's owner "has not been arrested at this time while the incident remains under investigation," police said.

do people not have car insurance and gap coverage (if still financed). Why not tell the police where the app. spotted your car. He almost lost his life over a car and now a12 year old is dead. Not, saying these thieves are not at fault but the aftermath could have been avoided.

Cops don't care that's why

Has happened here recently in my city folks had air tags in their stolen car

Called cops and cops did nothing so they went themselves

I don't blame people you know how hard it is to buy a used or new vehicle now?

People don’t generally think like that. Including many of us to be honest
