It's less the suffering of animals but the needless suffering and death. When employees are talking about their discomfort in the procedures not being ready and needlessly killing these animals, that's a problem.

It's not a case of say getting say some drug wrong and causing death unexpectedly, but they know it's not ready, and causing death when they shouldn't be attempting things yet.

It's the difference of say slaughtering an animal to eat and survive vs just killing for sport. They're not learning from the deaths, science isn't furthered by the deaths. They're just dying.

In science at some point or another, when dealing with biological things you must test it on something living. But you don't do it until you are certain you're ready.
