My Thoughts

Tom Cruise is the Top Gun again this weekend. Top Gun Maverick has won the Weekend Box Office for the third time in it's five weeks. It bounced back from last week's third place finish. Oh yeah, it just crossed a billion worldwide: $1,006,423,000. Talk about burying the lede. This is Tom Cruise's first billion dollar movie and the 50th Hollywood movie to enter the elusive club. The only thing missing from Tom's Hall of Fame legacy is an Oscar. We'll see if he can make it back to back billion buck movies next year with Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1. MI: Fallout grossed $791,657,408. I'm not betting against this dude.

top-gun.gif

Elvis just missed out on the number one spot by $177. :Phantom: You can put them Blue Suede Shoes away now, Presley. The "King of Rock and Roll" was outgunned and could top Top Gun. That's how the King of Movie Stars rolls. Better luck next weekend. :mjlol:

singing-elvis-presley.gif
:dame::scust:

Jurassic World: Dominion has now crossed the $300 million domestic threshold. It did that in it's 17th day, just 3 more days than it took Fallen Kingdom to do. JW: Dominion has now grossed $746,664,000 worldwide. But it still trails Fallen Kingdom by nearly $31 million through their first 3 weeks. Not bad. You already know who is bad...

The Black Phone, which I thought could be a nice lil sleeper hit, did well in it's first week amongst a couple of giants (no, not you, Elvis ). Opening in only 3150 theaters, it still took fourth place with a respectable $23.3 million. It has grossed $35,844,000 worldwide. Deliver Us from Evil, Scott Derrickson's last horror movie, grossed $30.5 million ($9.7 mill in 1st weekend) domestically back in 2014, while Sinister grossed $48 million ($18 mill in 1st weekend) in 2012. Those were total domestic grosses so The Black Phone looks to be sitting pretty so far. It's also been well received. I linked a review the other day and It's currently sitting at a 7.4 on IMDb on 9,000+ reviews. That's really good for a horror movie. That's looking like a ⭐⭐⭐ movie to me.:ehh:

would-you-like-to-see-a-magic-trick-the-grabber.gif

Hell no I ain't wanna see no magic trick from ur deranged ass. But I would like to see your movie. :manny:

The buzz for Buzz has died down. Not that there was any in the first place. :mjlol: But Lightyear did technically make the Top 5 so there's that. It fell 65% from last week . That theater count gonna be dropping this week. You can count on that. Sorry Buzz, it's gon be a lite year. Somebody don poisoned the waterhole! shyt, it mighta been Woody. :ohhh: You can take solace in the fact that you have grossed $152,370,257 worldwide, I guess?

space-suit-buzz-lightyear.gif

Buzz looking at that suit like Terrance Howard at the end of Ironman like:

iron-man-colonel-rhodes.gif

There wasn't no next time for Terrance and there ain't gon be no next time for Buzz.

The writing was on the wall for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; they dropped the ball. They chopped another 610 theaters off the board and only showed the movie in 1855 theaters. It looks like the billion dollar boys club will not be letting Doctor Strange in; it's grossed $947,014,432 worldwide. But, hey, there's always Thor. :yeshrug:

dr-strange-dr-strange2.gif

You can thank Tom Cruise for that.

Y'all stay cool. I got top flight Haier air conditioned air to help me with that. :mjlol: I also got Evil and Westworld to watch.

Until next week. :salute:

good on top gun defeating that culture vulture trash :blessed:

These are estimates and with only $176 difference between the two, it's still possible that Elvis could win this weekend when the official numbers come in, which we won't know till tomorrow night. Until that time tho, Tom Cruise wins again. :manny:

So it turns out that Elvis was able to capture the official number one spot for last weekend with a domestic gross of $31,211,579.

Top Gun: Maverick fell to second place with a gross of $29,614,139. It still crossed a billion worldwide but I had a feeling that Elvis might take that number spot as a new movie that was only $177 short of first place.

So I guess congratulations are in order to Elvis for "dethroning" Tom Cruise. I guess u can break them blue suede shoes out after all. :francis:

My Thoughts

Damn. There's a new sheriff in town. And his name is Gru. Minions: The Rise of Gru, debuted with $108.5 million. It pulled in another $93.7 mill in the international box office for a worldwide box office total of $202,210,000. I knew it would do numbers but I ain't see that coming. It did $48.2 million on Friday. Compare that to Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion's Friday debut's of $52 mill and $59.5 mill, respectively. That puts it in really good company so far. Thor will put it in its place next week, but still, Gru did his thing this week. Despicable Me 3 debuted with $72.4 million during the first weekend of July 2017. It would gross over $1 billion. Minions pulled in $115.7 million in it's first weekend on its way to a worldwide total of $1.1 billion. So Rise of Gru is sitting pretty. It also has a 7.1 on IMDb out of 6,500 ratings. That's ⭐⭐⭐ and a legit good movie.

you-dont-want-to-cross-me-dont-turn-on-me.gif

No I don't, Gru. No, I don't.

Top Gun: Maverick has become the 30th highest grossing movie worldwide. With another $25.5 million this weekend, it's now grossed $1,108,520,367. That's just behind Skyfall's $1,108,569,499, which it will pass officially pass tomorrow.

high-five-archer.gif

Elvis' $19 mill holding off Jurassic World Dominion's $15.6 mill for 3rd place is :francis:. Elvis has now grossed $113.5 worldwide. Jurassic World has now pulled in $824,513,935 worldwide. Fallen Kingdom grossed $16,199,430 in it's 4th weekend, which was a fall of 43.4% from the previous weekend. Dominion's drop of 41.5% from last week is actually slightly lower than what Fallen Kingdom did in 2018. So it's still right in line with what Fallen Kingdom did :manny:.
Them dinos ain't extinct just yet.

DismalSilverHousefly-max-1mb.gif

Lightyear, with it's $6.5 million, has finally crossed $100 million, as it sits at $105.3 mill. I guess it now qualifies as a summer blockbuster. :russ: It better drive subscribers to Disney+ when it drops there. I just checked it's rating on imdb...5.3. That's mediocre. Probably just a ⭐⭐ movie . With a $200 million production budget (and probably upwards of a $200 million marketing budget) and only grossing $187.5 million worldwide, Lightyear is flopping harder than Marcus Smart.

flying-flop.gif

Lightyear was washed for the #5 spot this weekend by The Black Phone, which pulled in $12.3 million and has grossed a very respectable $$47,464,325 domestically. It still holding strong on IMDb with a 7.3 rating. The 📞 is 👌🏽.

My Thoughts

Aight, so Thor: Love and Thunder had a big debut, no doubt, to the tune of $143 million. It also pulled in $159 million Internationally for a worldwide box office debut of $302 million. Look a lil deeper, tho. Thor was projected to debut to $150 million. It had a $250 million production budget and Marvel spent $100 million to promote it.

It did outgross Thor: Ragnarok's $123 million debut weekend in 2017. It also sits behind Jurassic World: Dominion's $145 million and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' $185 million for the biggest opening weekend of 2022. There's still a chance that it outgrosses Jurassic World: Dominion when the official numbers drop tomorrow. Either way, I woulda thought Thor woulda outgrossed Doctor Strange. Thor's Friday gross of $69.5 million is way behind Doctor Strange's $90.7 million. :francis: Thor: Love and Thunder is sitting at a 7.0 on IMDb out of 55,000 ratings. That's likely to go down as more ratings come in. It may drop down to 6.9 or 6.8. That means you're looking at a ⭐⭐ 1/2 movie, ⭐⭐⭐ at best. It'll probably get the ⭐⭐⭐ tho. I was right with No Way Home when I said it was a ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 movie based on watching it multiple times and looking at the IMDb rating:

Screenshot-20220709-004244-2.png

Compare Love and Thunder's 7.0 to Ragnarok's 7.9 and the fall off is real. It's still doing numbers tho so :yeshrug:

thor-battle-ropes.gif

With another $45.5 million, Minions: Rise of Gru, has now passed $210 million domestically. It had a 57.4% drop from last weekend. Thanks, Thor, you formerly fat fukk. MInions, with a worldwide gross of $399.8 million, will pass $400 million tomorrow. Despicable Me 3, the previous entry in the franchise, dropped 53.6% in it's second weekend, as it grossed $33.5 million. Rise of Gru is really not that far off more impressive when you consider Thor's debut.

good-night-gru.gif

Not, yet, Gru. You still got plenty of juice.

With another $15.4 million, Top Gun: Maverick now sits at a worldwide gross of $1.18 billion. It's $597.4 million domestic gross puts it just shy of $600 million, which it'll go past this week. Incredible 2's domestic gross of $608.5 million is next in Tom Cruise's sights.

top-gun2-carrier.gif

Elvis took 4th place with another $11 million. It's now sitting at $91.1 domestically and $155.1 million worldwide. It's gon go past $100 million domestically next week.

lanakane-hooray.gif

Rounding out the top 5 was Jurassic World: Dominion with another $8.4 million in it's 5th weekend. That's enough to pass the $350 million mark domestically. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, took in $11.2 million in it's 5th weekend but it only dropped by 30.5% from it's 4th weekend. Dominion fell by 48.6% from last weekend. That's a 59.3% difference. That's a big difference right there. Fallen Kingdom crossed the $350 million mark on it's 22nd day, while Dominion has done it in its 31st day, so it's lagging behind a full step behind. Still tho, Dominion has now grossed $876.4 million worldwide. I don't know if it's gonna cross a billion but it's gonna get close. Probably will fall a lil short like Doctor Strange has. We'll always have Bryce Dallassaurass Rex :manny:

bryce-dallas-howard.gif

You squeeze that thang through there :takedat:

Bonus shout-out to The Black Phone with another $7.6 million which was good for 6th place. With $62.3 million domestically and another $36.8 Internationally, it's now grossed $99.1 worldwide. It will cross the coveted $100 million mark worldwide tomorrow. Not bad for a $16-18 million movie :ehh:

My Thoughts

Audiences still got a lil Love for Thor but he losing a lil Thunder. In it's second weekend, Thor: Love and Thunder has won the Domestic Weekend Box Office with $46 million (13.8 million Friday gross). Thor did that in 4,375 theaters. I didn't mention this last week but that was 159 fewer theaters than Doctor Strange 2 opened in. :jbhmm:

That brings it's domestic gross to $233.2 million. I've seen 3 sites cite Thor: Love and Thunder's worldwide box office gross as $498 million. If you click on the movie title in my chart, it'll bring you to Box Office Mojo, which shows a worldwide gross of $712.9 million. That looks like a mistake tho. I saw that number and was like

wait-what.gif

Still, tho, that's a 68.1% drop in ticket sales from last weekend. Multiverse of Madness fell by 67% in it's second weekend from $187.4 mill to $61.7 mill. Technically, Spider-Man: No Way Home, fell by 67.5% in it's second weekend, but that was because Christmas was on that Saturday. No Way Home grossed more on the 26th than it did on Christmas. It also grossed $84.5 million it's second weekend so it's really apples and oranges. For comparison, Eternals fell 62.3% in the same time frame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dropped 54%. Taika,

admittedly-i-didnt-do-it.gif

Minions: Rise of Gru continues to put in work. Them lil yellow muthafukkas pulled in another $26.0 million in it's 3rd weekend. That brings it's domestic total to $262.5 million. With $270.1 million in the international box office, it's worldwide box gross now stands at $532.7 million. Rise of Gru's 3rd weekend drop of 43.6% is only slightly behind Despicable Me 3's 42.4%. Rise of Gru's $262.5 million after 3 weekends is outpacing Despicable Me 3's $188.3 million, not adjusting for inflation.

entering-the-room-stuart.gif

The newcomer, Where the Crawdads Sing, took 3rd place with $17 million. I can't front. I don't know anything about this movie. I may have seen a trailer for it? If I did, I didn't grab me like. Still tho, it was projected to do between $9-$10 million and it cost Sony $24 million to produce so it's looking like it'll make a profit.

cray-claw.gif

Top Gun: Maverick, in it's 8th weekend, grossed another $12 million. That brings it's domestic total to $617.9 million. It now trails Star Wars: The Last Jedi' $620.1 million and The Avengers' $623.3 million domestic grosses. Once it overtakes those two this week, Top Gun: Maverick, will become the 9th highest grossing film of all time at the Domestic Box Office.

giphy.gif

Elvis has now raped the Warner Brother fam to become the $100 million man. With another $7.6 million this weekend, it's now grossed $106.2 million domestically. It's at $170.4 million worldwide. With an $85 million production budget, it's still almost $43 million shy of being in the clear.

No gifs for you, Elvis. :mjpls:

A couple notes on a some movies outside the Top 5. The Black Phone was just released On Demand. I watched it the other day. It was excellent. Definitely a ⭐⭐⭐ movie. Glad to see it's still doing well with another $5.3 million this weekend.

Jurassic World Dominion, with another $4.9 million, now sits at $359.7 million domestically. It's now passed the $900 million mark worldwide, with $902.4 million. It was also released On Demand this week ... but I ain't watch it yet.:lolbron:

Sorry, Bryce.
