Entry Games that were considered Glorified Tech Demos

So I'm playing Sonic Origins and decided to go with the OG Sonic 1. It hits me that the first game was "ROUGH"

• WOAT level design that doesn't let you do much running (defeating the purpose of "Gotta go fast)
• Awkward mechanics and stiff movement
• Rough and aged terribly compared to the other Sonic games in the franchise

What game do you considered to be a tech demo at best, and not so much a good entry game to a popular game franchise.

You can say this about majority of 1st games in a series. Especially during the 3rd and 4th gen. Most games don’t hit their stride until the sequel. Street Fighter 2, Assassin’s Creed 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Uncharted 2, Super Mario Bros, etc.
