China specifically stole information pertaining to the confidencial business operations of the company and the inner workings of the United States credit reporting system.
(Wonder why they would want to know that? Maybe so they better understand how to cripple the US in case of future economic war)

Two years before Equifax Inc. stunned the world with the announcement it had been hacked, the Atlanta-based credit-reporting company believed it was the victim of a theft at the hands of Chinese spies, The Wall Street Journal reports.
In the previously undisclosed incident,security officials feared that former employees had removed thousands of pages of proprietary information before leaving and heading to jobs in China, The Journal says. Materials included code for planned new products, human-resources files and manuals.
Equifax reported the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency.
