Great interview

They talk about a lot but the key points are:

- where she was mentally when working on the album

- how she feels about the album today

- Breaking down the meaning behind specific songs

- where she stands on artists sampling her music

- digging into the visuals for the album

- thoughts on the state of music today

That album had some great songs on it

“I Want You”

“Back In The Day”

“Woo”

“Think Twice”
I want you is do mesmerizing to me. Like the buildup to the song and then the actual song is amazing. It’s one of her more perfect songs.

Baduism is flawless. Mama’s Gun starts off very strong but loses it’s momentum at the end
I need to revisit Mama’s Gun but I think I may already agree with you here. I definitely listen to that full album the least out of all even though there are some bangers on it.

Mama’s gun is definitely her magnum opus and definitive project. It expanded so much out of the RnB genre and ended up being a timeless gumbo pot of funk, jazz, RnB.

Musically perfect from front to back. a perfect storm of writing, vision, and artistic talent from the singing to the backing band. She was a much better artist on MG and truly grew into a star.

The rest of her discography is close behind though. Baduizm crawled so Mama’s gun and WW underground could run.

I wish she kept the soulquarian collaborations going.

I’m the opposite. It picks up even more artistically in the second half, unless you’re looking for bangers. Baduizm is the one that loses steam for me. It just feels so restricted and gets stale after a while. It doesn’t feel nearly as alive as Mama’s Gun. WW underground felt like a mix of the two.

Hell yeah, I love how that song starts with the heart beat

Mama’s Gun has so many classic songs

Times A Wastin’
Cleva
Green eyes
Didn’t Cha know
Penitentiary
& On….

I love the sequencing on Mama’s Gun
