ESPN's research into its streaming ratings has revealed that numbers are up.
According to the network, ESPN has seen a 23% increase in viewership among millennials (the 18-34 age group) year-over-year when live streaming and out-of-home viewing is counted. In the 25-54 demographic, the gain was 18%.
Overall, ESPN’s viewing is up 4% in total day viewing and 13% in prime time.
“These early findings from Nielsen tell us that Total Live Audience is the only meaningful way to understand sports consumption, including key insights into our Millennial viewers,” Cary Meyers, ESPN SVP of Fan and Media Intelligence, said in a statement. “We will continue to mine this data to not only inform us on how best to serve fans with our content, but also to guide advertisers on how best to optimize their brand on our platform with specific audiences.”
Monday Night Football had an increase of 13%, college football was up 16% and the NBA saw an 18% jump.
The millennials specifically had a 26% increase for Monday Night Football, 33% increase for college football, and 27% increase for the NBA.
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Nielsen admitted that complete numbers for TV ratings haven't been given because streaming hasn't been counted in the traditional system.
