Eternal Darkness Remake Announced For Wii U
E3 and Nintendo’s Digital Event is almost upon us. In a little less than 2 weeks times we will be blessed with announcements of new Nintendo games for the Wii U and 3DS. In anticipation for gaming’s biggest event of the calendar year, I thought it may be fun to make a few predictions to get the excitement levels up.
My first prediction is that Nintendo will announced a remake of the GameCube cult classic – Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem – for the Nintendo Wii U. I know that many E3 predictions are based on wishful thinking, but I do have solid grounds to be confident about this certain fortune cookie.
You may remember last year that a peculiar rumor emerged suggesting that Nintendo is working on a remaster title for the Wii U. The rumor holds some credence as it is the same individual who correctly leaked Devil’s Third and that Super Smash Bros. will be compatible with Amiibo.
Perhaps the most solid clue that we have to go by, is that Nintendo has been adamant in keeping the Eternal Darkness IP. This surely cannot be a wild goose chase because to be successfully granted a reapplication for a trademark, Nintendo has to show real intentions to use the IP.

In the last Eternal Darkness trademark application by Nintendo, the form states:
“The applicant has a continued bona fide intention to use or use through the applicant’s related company or licensee the mark in commerce on or in connection with all of the goods and/or services listed in the Notice of Allowance or as subsequently modified for this specific class.”
Surely, Nintendo has something up their sleeves in regards to Eternal Darkness. Could it be a Virtual Console port of Eternal Darkness:Sanity’s Requiem for the Wii U? Could it be the teased sequel, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Redemption? Or is it a HD remaster of the original for the Wii U? I personally believe it will be the latter.
Just imagine all the possibilities that an Eternal Darkness remaster could bring to the Wii U. Nintendo can create clever insanity effects on the Wii U GamePad, which could be enhanced by advance graphical capabilities of the Wii U when compared to the GameCube. The GamePad itself can be used as the Tone of Eternal Darkness, allowing you to quickly assign spells, use spells and change weapons on the fly.
Eternal Darkness does, however, need a few gameplay upgrades to meet modern standards. For starters the AI and combat needs to be improved to provide more of a challenge and to increase anxiety levels when facing the demons of hell. I believe Nintendo should look at the Dead Space series. Both games use the decapitation system, but the main difference is that there is a greater focus on melee weapon in Eternal Darkness. At the very least, the Zombies should be more aggro.
Furthermore, Eternal Darkness can provide a bit of diversity to the Wii U lineup. A sublime survival horror game with an excellent lore and gameplay mechanics is something that the Wii U library needs for variety. While we do have ZombiU and the upcoming Fatal Frame V, Eternal Darkness can help Nintendo to satisfy users that crave survival horrors.
While the announcement of a Eternal Darkness game at E3 is not a certain, but I am fairly confident in my prediction. I honestly believe that a new Eternal Darkness will be announced at E3 2015. I bet my first born on it, if I had a child (but I don’t). What are your thoughts? Am I convincing you? How much would you wager in a bet against me?
