Do you believe it is just to punish someone for something they once did, even if future safety is guaranteed and blatantly obvious?

Or do you believe punishment should be used only to assure further safety?

For each example, state what you'd do.

Example One: If someone were to break into your house and rob something, but were later on strict watch by authorities so this will for sure not happen again, and you were given an option of whether or not they would be contained in a prison - would you want them to be contained or would you be fine as long as you knew you and everyone else were safe from this person?

Example Two: A bit more personal. If someone were to murder your closest loved ones, but (somehow*) it was guaranteed that this person would never do anything of the sort again to anybody, and you had the same option as you did in Example One, would you want them contained or would you be fine knowing you and everyone else was safe from this person?

(somehow*) = A given, further detail is not required, a hypothetical variable that cannot go wrong and so it's not important how, it just is for sure.

thoughts?

Example One: I am never in favor of removing someone from society and placing them in an oppressive state/removing freedom unless they pose a danger to their own life or others (psychologically disturbed/mentally disturbed); Plus as long as we have the current police state system in place, I will NEVER feel safe; it isn't the robber I'm afraid of the most (they are mostly stealing because of the structural inequalities that facilitate that behavior); its the police state and their exploitative practices.

Example Two: What are the circumstances behind the "murder"? Put it into context. Answering that question without more background is illogical.

In terms of punishment, I do believe that punishment is necessary for a just society, but I do not believe in the punishment system that exists today; it is part of a foundationally unjust, capitalist, exploitative, racist system where the people that are punished the most are dialectically related to the people who are oppressed by society the most. This includes African Americans especially, Native Americans, poor people of all colors, and women.

For a just punishment system to exist, we must restructure the current system we exist in so that punishments are equally distributed amongst all people regardless of class, race, gender, religion/non-religion, etc.

the evils of truth, and love
I believe karma is a real thing, so in a way I do believe in vengeance. I wouldn't want to wish harm or death or prison on someone though because it's a waste of my energy. Instead I feel people will receive what is coming to them depending on the level of negativity they put out.
