Ex-spy chief works to undo Angela Merkel’s legacy of liberalism
The former head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has criticised Angela Merkel’s immigration policies as “fatal” and accused the chancellor of leading the country into decline.

Hans-Georg Maassen, one of the most divisive figures in German public life, ran the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, loosely equivalent to MI5, for six years, including during the 2015 migration crisis.

He was forced out in 2018 after publicly contradicting the chancellor’s claim that foreigners had been “hunted” by extremist thugs during a bout of unrest in the east German city of Chemnitz. The furore over his remarks nearly led to the break-up of the ruling “grand coalition”.

Maassen, 58, is now standing to become an MP for Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU)

Poland warns of further large migrant clashes on Belarus border

"KYIV, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Thousands of migrants were massing near the Belarus border on Monday, Polish authorities said, as European Union member states called for more sanctions against Minsk and security forces braced for more attempts to force through the frontier.

Warsaw has accused Belarus of trying to spark a major confrontation, with video clips showing hundreds of migrants walking towards the Polish border and some trying to breach the fence using spades and other implements.

"We expect that in the coming hours attacks on our border will be renewed by groups of several hundred people," Pawel Soloch, the head of Poland's National Security Bureau, told reporters.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller said that there were currently 3,000-4,000 migrants near the border, and more than 10,000 others across Belarus ready to try and cross into Poland."

This is like when all those articles about Surge Pricing on New York City focused on uber wealthy people who drive everyone and how sad it made them. Completely ignores that regular folks use the public transport system and that it works well!

A technology with at this point a negligible impact in total transportation marks european decline but the extensive high speed rail network in Europe but absent in US, counts for nothing. Not even counting european cities public transport networks

Doctor, I'm afraid it's the worst case of Car Brain I've ever seen. Terminal. We've tried everything: electric buses, light rail networks.

There's simply no hope for them, they still insist on being shuttled around in a lethally defective VC investor pipe dream driven by a lobotomised HAL 9000

24/50
🇺 zemyla.bsky.social
It's not just car brain. The Economist wants robotaxis to happen because they only help the affluent and funnel money to billionaires. If they used buses and trains, they'd have to share them with poor people.

Pssst the US also has an absence of robotaxis. They exist in like two cities, neither of which have snow and both of which were laid out and constructed in the past 100 years.

🇺 sasquatch121.bsky.social
Is this a joke? The United States has absolute garbage infrastructure for a supposedly first world county. Particularly when it comes to transport. I don’t think people in Copenhagen or Geneva are worried about the lack of robotaxis lol. What an embarrassing headline.

38/50
🇺 lyxolf.bsky.social
The US is a regressive country that insists on trying to invent new ways to do things other countries just do better.
Trains, bike paths, busses, and city planning that allows for walking are all things Europe has that makes the US look like an ancient relic trying to apply a shiny coat of paint.

39/50
🇺 lyxolf.bsky.social
The US makes trillions every year and scoffs at the idea of having a functional society because “I don’t want to use my tax dollars on making someone else’s life better!”
Okay hun enjoy your overpriced food and oversized pickup truck you ‘bought’ with a 72 month loan.
But at least you got robotaxi.

Funny definition of "falling behind." I view wiping out an entire profession (taxi drivers) while simultaneously trying to put more vehicles on the road (more robotaxis = more profit) instead of investing in public transport as nothing short of a catastrophic failure.
