Brehs, how can I recover the shyt I got on there, it won't turn on or be recognized by any computer. I thought it was the cord and I bought a new one, but it still wont turn on or connect, I aint trying to to pay $500 to have someone get the shyt from there.

Any ideas, or how-to's, anything

^What he said.

I personally use those WD joints that are portable and powered via USB. I got 3 of em (had 4 but I dropped one of em and it was dying shortly after :sadbron: luckily I could salvage the data before it died completely :whew:)

so retarded question, what do I do with that?

it will only help if the problem is with something in your current enclosure

basically an external HDD has an actual HDD inside of it. depending on the size of the external, it may be a full sized 3.5" desktop drive, or a smaller 2.5" laptop drive. the main 'conversion' that takes place in the enclosure is going from the standard SATA and power connections of a desktop/laptop drive, to a single USB. so if there's something wrong with the stuff that handles that conversion, a new enclosure should help. BUT there's no guarantee that's the issue. the actual drive could be fuct. you can still possibly recover your data, but it would be more complicated and/or costly

anyway, you'll have to (carefully) take apart your external HDD to get to the actual HDD inside. then hook the actual HDD to one of those 'enclosures'

There's one thing you can try before doing anything that involves money. This worked for me when I had a busted toshiba external. Physically push down on the harddrive to make the platter spin correctly. It's only a temporary fix and will only work for a limited amount of time, but if it works, immediately transfer all your files to a new hd.

Also, is the harddrive externally powered or is it usb only? If it's externally powered, then my solution might not work.

Its USB only, its a toshiba one too. Its a 1.5. Cause i dropped 20 on a cord, so i aint even trying to spend more unless i know for sure. So do I just plug it in and then push down until i hear it spinning?

yeah push down on it while it's starting up. You might have to push hard. Please be aware that this could also hurt your hard drive. This is like a last ditch effort.

Before you do that though, I have one question. Did you hear clicking and what not before this crash happened?

I didnt hear anything at all, definitely no clicking, I went to plug it in my laptop and the light didnt go on and I didnt hear the hard drive moving at all. I tried it on my home computer and my work one and it still wouldnt light up, so my brother said check to see if its the cord, but that theory proved wrong today

I don't suggest my strategy then, unless you want to take the risk of further ruining your hdd. I heard clicking before mine died, so I knew it was the platter not spinning correctly and suspected that pushing down would work (which it did). It sounds like you might have another problem.

But it might be worth a try. It's a risk though, so be warned
