Extremely casual sports guy here: How do you decide what team to rep?

I enjoy watching the NBA during the playoffs and this NFL post-season has got me interested in watching football more. I watched the last quarter of the Super Bowl this year and I couldn't believe how fun and entertaining that was.

How do sports fans decide what teams to like? I live in Utah so the only professional team we have is the Utah Jazz (when I was a kid in the 90s, during the Malone/Stockton years they were fun to watch but I have no interest in them outside of that period) and then some great/decent college football teams. Do you just follow sports and sort of align with teams that have players and coaches you like?

I can't imagine "choosing" a team.. All my teams are the teams my family watched growing up, the hometown teams, etc. The only team I "chose" was the Twolves since Pittsburgh doesn't have an NBA team, but it's because they had a player who went to my high school. So I dunno man, I feel like your teams sorta choose you.

i guess denver is the closest major city to you with other teams, so looks like you are a Denver fan

I really dont know what to tell a dude from Utah tbh. When you don't have a state pro team other than the Jazz you gotta pick a regional team like the Broncos or something.

I root for NY teams cause I live there (Giants, Jets, Mets and Knicks )

If I ever moved out of the Tri State I'd still root for NY teams

I say if you're just starting out as a fan, pick whatever team entertains you. If that happens to be your hometown team or a team that plays in the city you live in then cool. If not, who gives a damn.

Pick the team who has all the momentum

I can never cheer for losers
