Federal authorities have charged a Trump-loving former Chicago-area Latin Kings gangster for his alleged, and extensively documented, trespassing into the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
Drawing on widely-publicized photos and Kash Lee Kelly’s own social media accounts, federal agents have charged the northwestern Indiana resident with unlawfully entering the seat of government with fellow Trump supporters. The criminal complaint, obtained by The Daily Beast, notes “law enforcement agents who have known Kelly for several years” helped identify him in some of the images.
The Department of Justice indicted Kelly and 11 other members of the Latin Kings in 2017 for running a drug-dealing ring, although he avoided the racketeering charges brought against his peers. According to the Northwest Indiana Times, Kelly was convicted and had been awaiting sentencing when he traveled to D.C.—and said in an interview he believed he was allowed to make the trip.
“Because I’m Black, I thought I would get a pass like all the other Black people who committed crimes this year,” Kelly said in a Facebook Live interview.
This is in keeping with the public persona Kelly has adopted in recent years, having reinvented himself as a religious, pro-law-and-order social media personality and activist, and festooning himself in pro-Trump gear in his online profiles. In an interview recorded last November, Kelly argued police officers were “justified” in killing black men who “made a wrong decision”—even going so far as to assert George Floyd was “high as a kite” when Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin fatally kneeled on his neck.

Guy Reffitt, of Wylie, Texas, was arrested by the FBI on Sunday in connection to the January 6 US Capitol riot.
- According to a charging affidavit, Reffitt threatened to kill his children if they told the FBI he had taken part in the riot.
- Video from the insurrection cited by the FBI shows Reffitt standing on the US Capitol's steps as rioters who support President Donald Trump stormed the building.

Guy Reffitt, who the FBI says is part of a far-right extremist group called "Texas Freedom Force," was arrested on Sunday and charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and obstruction of justice.
The FBI said in a charging affidavit that Reffitt, a 48-year-old oil worker from Wylie, Texas, first bragged about his trip to Washington, DC, to his family, saying he had filmed the riot on a GoPro-style camera.
Upon learning of the FBI's investigation into the insurrection, Reffitt threatened to shoot his children if they turned him in to authorities, the affidavit said.
His wife told the FBI that Reffitt told his son and daughter: "If you turn me in, you're a traitor and you know what happens to traitors … traitors get shot."
He separately told his daughter he'd "put a bullet" through her phone if she posted about him on social media, according to the affidavit.
But Reffitt's family did end up speaking to the FBI, the affidavit said, and days later, agents arrived at Reffitt's door with a search warrant.
Reffitt later told FBI agents that he was in Washington, DC, the day of the insurrection, but did not go inside the building.
He also said he brought Smith and Wesson pistol to Washington, DC, but had disassembled it to comply with gun laws.
Video cited by the FBI shows Reffitt standing on a staircase outside the Capitol building wearing a helmet and appearing to use a water bottle to flush out his eyes.
Reffitt is among about 100 people who have been charged so far in connection to the Capitol riot, which was carried out by supporters of President Donald Trump as Congress debated Electoral College votes from the 2020 election, which was won by President-elect Joe Biden.

On Monday, FBI agents arrested Brendan Hunt, a 37-year-old assistant court analyst from Ridgewood, Queens, in his home and charged him with making threats against elected officials, according to documents seen by the Daily Beast. According to a criminal complaint seen by NBC News., Hunt called for "the public execution" of Congressional Democrats on his Facebook page.
"Trump, we want actual revenge on Democrats. Meaning, we want you to hold a public execution of Pelosi, AOC, Schumer, etc. And if you don't do it, the citizenry will. We're not voting in another rigged election," Hunt wrote on Facebook in December under an alias. "Start up the firing squads, mow down these commies, and let's take America back!"
Hunt reportedly also used a personal website, as well as conservative social media app Parler and video-sharing site bytchute to promote his extremist views, which included threats to bring guns to Biden's Jan. 20 inauguration. Prosecutors said his rants prompted an investigation by federal authorities.
Following the Capitol insurrection, Hunt posted a video of himself on bytchute in which he urged his followers to "kill your senators," according to NBC News. In the video, Hunt reportedly said, "they're going to come after us, they're gonna kill us, so we have to kill them first...so get your guns, show up to DC….if anybody has a gun, give me it, I'll go there myself and shoot them and kill them."
Hunt's social media profiles, which were still active as of Tuesday according to the Eagle, display rampant conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
According to NBC, Hunt, the son of a retired Queens family court judge, was a former Occupy Wall Street activist. In posts on his personal website, Hunt reportedly identified himself as a member of an Occupy Wall Street drum circle in featured photos and articles about the movement.
During Hunt's arraignment on Tuesday, Assistant US Attorney David Kessler described Hunt's direct calls for violence against elected officials as "chilling."
Hunt's attorney reportedly asked the judge to set bail due to his client's lack of criminal history. The judge denied the request due to the "nature and seriousness of danger to the community."
