Heartbreak is rippling through Brakpan after 14-year-old Malcolm Booyens was mowed down by a 12-year-old driver who blew through a stop sign before slamming into a fence.
The young driver, barely out of primary school, was behind the wheel on Saturday when he struck Malcolm and left a community shattered.
On Sunday, grief turned to remembrance. According to The Citizen’s sister paper, Brakpan Herald, loved ones gathered for a poignant vigil. A large wooden cross became a canvas for messages of love and loss, as flowers piled up in Malcolm’s honour.

Malcolm’s father, Quinton Booysens, told Sowetan that the boy driver’s mother later came to speak with him, insisting her son hadn’t been given permission to take the vehicle.
He’d been skating alongside his son when disaster struck.
By the time Ekurhuleni Metro Police arrived, it was too late. Paramedics could only confirm the devastating truth – Malcolm was dead at the scene.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed the 12-year-old was taken into custody and later released to his parents.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Brakpan magistrate’s court soon, Dlamini confirmed.

“But no matter what she says or does, it won’t bring Malcolm back,” Booysens said flatly.

“As I turned the corner, I saw a white car (Mazda) flying past the stop sign. A loud bang followed. I rushed ahead and saw [Malcolm’s] skateboard first, then him lying on the pavement,” he recounted, his voice heavy with anguish.
