Fayetteville changes street names after leaders say the old names were tied to slavery

The change, approved in April of last year, goes into effect today

01/02/25

A pair of streets in a Fayetteville neighborhood now have new names. The change comes after city leaders said the old names were tied to slavery. According to the city's website, North Plantation Avenue is now North Garden Avenue and West Chattel Street is now West Reflection Street.
It impacts about 32 homes in the Heritage Village subdivision.

In April, Fayetteville City Council unanimously approved the name change. City council member D'Andre Jones said the city waited to make the change to give people time to update their addresses and notify the post office.
"We wanted to make sure that we gave them ample amount of time to do what they needed to do," Jones said. "We want to make sure that this process is fair and that it's equitable, and that our citizens feel as if they have some say and they have some buy in, and that they are supported as best as they can be."
Jones said this is to make the community more welcoming.
"The goal, of course, is to continue to create a community of belonging," Jones said. "We want to make sure that all of our streets, all of our neighborhoods are conducive to that. And that's what this is based upon. This is not eradicating or erasing history. This is simply making sure that we foster a community of belonging."
Jones said the council is looking at the possibility of changing the names of other streets

they did something similar in tulsa (we are about 110 miles from fayetteville AR). they changed brady street (named after local politician/racist w tate brady, a real piece of shyt. i peed on his grave on 11th street lol) to "reconciliation way." im glad the city did it but it wouldve been a lot better if the survivors actually got their settlements. it also kinda seems like a low effort gesture.. since our city map is grid based, streets/avenues are LONG (no dame), and theres a bunch of signs they missed.

if youre gonna do it, then do it! they changed the street name to reconcilation TEN YEARS ago. fix the damn signs! :damn:

it bothers me cos they'll do shyt like this, and it sounds cool on the surface, then you realize MLK jr blvd is only named MLK in the "black" parts, and called "Cincinnati Ave" in downtown/wealthy part of town :pacspit:

basically if you look at the map, MLK "stops" at reconciliation way (formerly brady) and becomes cincinnati. maybe im reading too much into this, but it looks intentional, like it was some little way the city could spit at the tribute. they did NOT want to rename north cincinnati. and this happened in 2012. 2012!! chicago started the trend in 1968.

again maybe im just :mjlit: but it makes sense... what do yall think??
