Fayetteville changes street names after leaders say the old names were tied to slavery
The change, approved in April of last year, goes into effect today
01/02/25
A pair of streets in a Fayetteville neighborhood now have new names. The change comes after city leaders said the old names were tied to slavery. According to the city's website, North Plantation Avenue is now North Garden Avenue and West Chattel Street is now West Reflection Street.
It impacts about 32 homes in the Heritage Village subdivision.
In April, Fayetteville City Council unanimously approved the name change. City council member D'Andre Jones said the city waited to make the change to give people time to update their addresses and notify the post office.
"We wanted to make sure that we gave them ample amount of time to do what they needed to do," Jones said. "We want to make sure that this process is fair and that it's equitable, and that our citizens feel as if they have some say and they have some buy in, and that they are supported as best as they can be."
Jones said this is to make the community more welcoming.
"The goal, of course, is to continue to create a community of belonging," Jones said. "We want to make sure that all of our streets, all of our neighborhoods are conducive to that. And that's what this is based upon. This is not eradicating or erasing history. This is simply making sure that we foster a community of belonging."
Jones said the council is looking at the possibility of changing the names of other streets

but it makes sense... what do yall think??
