I have been recently trying to get a federal job and I was wondering if anyone had some good tips they can share. I heard, for example, the resume has to be in paragraph form. I am a veteran and I also have a Bachelors degree, should I take something low paying to get my foot in the door?

Federal jobs is about hitting check marks on the job openning and hoping the job wasn't made for someone already there.

If you are looking for an IT job, look at USAJobs for Ft. Gordon for the Cyber Protection Brigade they are looking for civilians big time.

The easiest way is to become a Federal contractor. Then once a Federal job opens up you'll be first in line.

Palace acquire if you are a recent grad.
Look for gov job fairs. Network. Know the KSAs and tailor your resume.
If you were previous military...you didn't go to TAP?

DMV is where it's at.

Try looking there.

Yea Taps didn't teach us much on getting federal positions. I found someone willing to help me with writing a resume for federal jobs, I was just coming here to see if anyone had extra tips. I refuse to live in the DMV, like a seven-figure salary couldn't convince me to relocate there. I don't really care about the pay or the money I just want to get into the system.

Put your resume on USAJOBS, but also on job posting sites, occasionally fed agencies might run to a headhunter to fill positions.
Then be aware fed jobs can take a long as time sometimes.
I put in for a Dept. of State position last NOvember and I"m just now getting ready for the interview portion.

Anyone know how to get into fed overseas work
just have to apply and hope you score high enough.
sometimes its better to be a federal employee looking to switch for some of those
Thats civilians though, if you are talking about federal contracting look at vectus and some of the ME fed contractors

From what I here Vectus is the worst, but typically they are how most people get their foot in the door.
You'll be in either Afghanistan (worst case) or Iraq , if you get lucky you might get Qatar or UAE and from there you get the actual good companies.
I got an offer from them this year for 120 to go to Afghanistan but I passed, because I don't want to go to afghanistan for that little.
Give them a look though and put your application in, they were looking for IAs and Sys Admins, I think they do army networks so you'll need a windows cert of linux+ on top of your 8570 cert and if they like you they move pretty quickly.

Appreciate the look

My homies did Afghanistan, I don’t mind for a year because I’m not going to be in any combat. I just wanna stack some bread.

I got windows certs and know enough Linux so I’m down af.

UAE or Qutar would be better tho.

Where are you located and what field are you in? You may have to think about relocating depending on your job field.

You are right about paragraph the form. But your resume needs to have certain key words to be picked up on. Also, don't use a "one size fits all" resume. Tweak your resume to the job announcement.

I live in the DMV. I didn't want to move here because of the high cost of living. But I moved anyway because you can go up in grade quicker. Another benefit is working at the Headquarters level, versus anywhere else you're at. Some people move here, get their grade up, then leave to a lower cost of living area. It does cost a hell of lot here, but I might end up staying anyway since I'm starting to like it a little.

As far as starting off at a low grade, you can do that...and many people do. But again, it's about location. You may be in an area where there isn't a lot of potential growth in your field.
