“It’s impossible to be a leader of a cartel in Colombia without violence,” Chupeta said.
“The two go hand in hand.”

Thats how Amado Carrillo Fuentes - Wikipedia died
He will probably serve 25 years or so, and be out when he's 85, and may not live long after that. He has been in custody since 2007, so it isn't like he's leading some luxury life. He's taking the deal, when your life goes from beyond belief to the chance of a better mattress, these guys tend to make the pragmatic choice. He's also gay/bi, and his nickname means "suck", he was arrested in Brazil, and his boyfriend was some bodybuilder personal trainer. I think his wife was with him.
As far as cooperation and who gets the life and who gets 25, there are so many factors. I imagine if they had brought in El Senor first, they would offer the same deal to Guzman, to turn on his former associate. But, it didn't play out like that. Also, Guzman, for his part, has refused any deals, or cooperation agreement, regardless of whether they were even offered, which I don't believe they were. The DOJ want this one of the books, life in prison. No deals. No reductions.
you think Colombia's relationship with the USA just improved out of nowhere? When it comes to Colombia, America is in a tough spot
How is he a credible witness? It can be argued that he has something to gain by lying.
I get what you're saying, but eventually Chapo transitioned into being THE plug... for most of USA and some local places in Mexico, at least. At first this dude here, who oversaw production in Colombia, would pay Chapo a flat fee to bring everything into the States. From there they'd do a little split: Chapo and the Mexicans got to take some to sell on their own, and the Colombians who already had distribution networks set up, took the lion's share to sell.
It sounds like this dude eventually handed everything over to Chapo besides physical production. Maybe he got tired of the bullshyt, he was a wanted man, etc... but at some point there were no more transportation fees, no more distribution splits... he just sold Chapo the product straight from the little jungle labs down there, and Chapo was 100% on his own afterwards. One of the articles that I read quoted this guy saying towards the end Chapo was bringing him a little over $1 million a year...which I thought was a typo, but I guess it makes sense if Chapo was just copping wholesale product from him. Still seems low but maybe Chapo was getting a crazy low price for product, I guess. The upcharge on drugs comes from all the work it takes to get it into the country. I wonder how much Chapo was paying for a kilogram towards the end, and also if Chapo had other suppliers down there as well
Cool, another glorification of violence thread...
it's funny that you mention Amado Fuentes aka "The Lord of the Skies"...
Lollipop was the PLUG for him as well ...Fuentes was in debt to the tune of 400 million for a shipment lost in the Pacific Ocean ...which he had the fortune of not having to repay because Ramirez a couple of years later under intense pressure from law enforcement turned himself into authorities ....
In the early 1990s, for example, Mr. Ramírez said he sent a fishing boat, filled with 20 tons of cocaine, to the Pacific Ocean to meet a Mexican boat that was owned and operated by Amado Carrillo Fuentes, one of Mr. Guzmán’s allies in the Sinaloa drug cartel. But Mr. Carrillo Fuentes’s captain, a cocaine addict, started having drug-induced visions that United States Coast Guard ships were near. Afraid of being caught, Mr. Ramírez said, the Mexican captain sank his ship — and lost $400 million in cocaine.
