This looks :whew:

A former military chaplain is wracked by grief over the death of his son. Mary is a member of his church whose husband, a radical environmentalist, commits suicide, setting the plot in motion.

Last week, I happened to catch American Gigolo, for the first time, and looked up the director, Paul Shrader, who also did this. I went to LA 2 days later and caught him at the Areo theater in Santa Monica for a double feature, 'Affliction', and 'Light Sleeper', with Willem Dafoe as a burnt out cocaine deliveryman in Midtown 1992.

He spoke for about 30 min about those movies, and First Reformed, this looks very good. He talked about the struggle to get this released in theaters at all, it has been finished and on the film festival circuit since 2017.

This was good. It's going to be polarizing though.
It's a strange movie and a slow burn but it definitely started feeling taxi driver near the end. Darkly funny though.

When it ended there was laughter in the theater, people were confused

Can someone explain the symbolism of this movie and what was supposed to be so exceptionally good about it?

Movie is getting mad critical acclaim and I’m sitting here kind of :gucci: at it.

GODAMN this was good. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I watched it.

Yeah its fantastic. Its one of those films that each person can interpret in a slightly different way, and you can think about differently on repeat viewings. I think the subject matter is really important - what do you fight for? whats worth living for? what is important or real in human life? how can you make things better?

Schrader is one of those filmmakers who should be much more revered. His film 'Blue Collar' is one of the greatest philosophical movies, and one of the few that tackle class warfare and the inner workings of capitalism.
