The public option was scraped just for that one additional vote.

I saw something on TV revisiting the history of that whole battle for the ACA and this shyt just made me mad.

shyt is crazy to me how close we were to a public option and killing these insurance companies. :snoop:

People were blaming Obama for not pushing for the "public option" in Obamacare. But the democratic majority was just numeric, not liberal.
He had zero chance with these conservative "democrats" in office:

Joe Lieberman: He loudly threatened to vote against the bill if the public option was included (his wife was also a pharma executive)
Ben Nelson: Obama had to bend over to get his vote... Remember the "cornhusker kickback"?
Max Baucus
Mary Landrieu
Arlen Specter
(he switched parties in 2009 and it still couldn't save his ass)
Mark Pryor
Jon Tester
Blanche Lincoln
Jim Webb
Evan Bayh
Kent Conrad

The bill passed 60-39 just to break the filibuster thru reconciliation. Obama needed every single one of those votes.
In the end, those senators paid the price too: none of them was reelected.

joe lieberman was the real thorn. he's why obama didn't want much talk about the public option and wanted to move on to things that were doable because the longer the bill was being debated without getting anywhere the less likely it was to pass. lieberman was like don't talk to me if the public option is on the table because that will be a quick conversation: NO. and we have to remember that lieberman campaigned hard for mccain, so obama had nothing to offer him in exchange for going against his wife's interests.

and of the senators superuknown listed, lieberman was the only one that lost because he wasn't liberal enough.

Lieberman won as an independent after losing the dem primary to Lamont in 2006. He chose not to run in 2010

because he wouldn't win again. he was a powerful senator who could ride with whoever had the majority, they don't just give up power like that easily. the climate in CT was changing for him. his polling wasn't looking good for 2012, like 20% of CT voters thought he should be reelected.
