If you are a breh in starting off in the IT helpdesk, listen up and listen closely.

Your #1 priority needs to be GETTING THE FUKK OUT of the helpdesk as quickly as possible. It's good to have that on your resume as you're starting off but after a while working helpdesk is a pain in the ass because of the amount of dumb customers you have to deal with on a daily :martin:

Most IT jobs have an adequate amount of downtime. I strongly advise anyone in the helpdesk to use that time studying for your certs. You wont regret it.

The helpdesk is straight up purgatory. I've been working helpdesk for 3 years and Im just now realizing this. :mjcry:

Every single day I got my packet tracer fired up and my CCNA books on deck while I grind to get my way out.

Don't be like me and take 1095 days of L's before you decide to do something about it.

What's the networking situation at your job like? Gotta meet and talk to people in the department you want to be in.

Man is talking about IT jobs like I'm not going from warehouse to warehouse to factory to factory.

The thread is specifically for those who are already in the IT game. But if you doing warehouse work, do what you need to do secure that long term bag, get your certs or start looking at what certs you want to obtain if you want to get that IT bread. :hubie:

In Dallas/Ft Worth the IT market is popping out here. Right now I'm just focused on building my skillset up first, get the needed certs (CCNA) and then take it from there. I'm a master at finessing my resume to make it suit the position I'm aiming for.

Op some jobs ask for a years experience etc what do you say to that? If someone is starting off, gets their certs in whatever in a few months but the jobs they applying for asks for a years experience. I'm assuming he's gonna stay that long and applying the role again. Or are you saying its possible for someone to have a few months in helpdesk and get the job that asks for that much experience?

Experience matters, but skillset matters more. If you can go in the interview, be honest with them. Say if you've been working helpdesk for 6 months but applying for a networking position, let them know you've been studying the needed skills for the job. When they start quizzing you, be sure you know your shyt and have the necessary certs to back you up and you'll eat. Apply in a market that's popping and someone will take a chance on you.

I got a violent criminal record. They won't let me anywhere near an office lol. I only do warehouse and factory jobs because they don't do a background check.

I'd still shoot my shot if I was in your position. You don't know how many neck tattoo'd "criminal" mofos I see on a daily in IT. Ultimately they only care about if you got the skills to do your job. Yeah that record is going to hamper you, but it still don't hurt to try.

Or you could stack your money up at the warehouse and use that to get your record expunged maybe. :patrice:
