For the rappers and writers in here, I got a question…

Y’all ever think that that shyt ruined your listening experience when it comes to rap music? Lol. Like a regular average fan, they hear/listen to bars and shyt totally different, some shyt they think is just super mind blowingly “lyrical” be some “ehh” ish to you. You’re listening for rhyme patterns and flow pockets and not-so-obvious wordplay and cadences and the words themselves that are being used, etc… the average fan don’t know or care about none of that, 😆.

Of course this doesn’t apply to all writers and rappers, I’m talking to y’all who are on that rap rap shyt, you know exactly what I’m talking about, lol. I don’t rap but I used to and I’m still on this, so I know y’all that rap currently are too. I lowkey wish I could go back to before I learned about all that technical shyt just to see what my definition of “lyrical” was back then, 😳

Not at all, more like enhanced it.

That's not to say I can't zone out and appreciate more simple stuff. One of my favorite young rappers is YN Jay and if you know me you'd probably be surprised that I fukk with him like that lol.

But for the most part if you ain't ever made me go "I wish I wrote that shyt" I can't really be much of a fan of yours. You'd have to be doing something pretty unique to catch my attention otherwise. Being such an active lisener has given me a depth of enjoyment that I don't see most people have.

nikkas is ass bro I hate feeling like I can cook these dudes. Yea you need the confidence but a nikka wasn’t saying he’s better than nas or jay z back then. Even now. And yes I do rap thecoli has seen me in my peak as far as being an artist. I’m in back burner mode cooking beats and getting my name out so anything I have out is old.

IM ALWAYS LISTENING FOR
THOSE THINGS YOU MENTIONED
BUT IF ITS A GOOD SONG
ITS A GOOD SONG REGARDLESS.

A LOT OF TECHNICAL LYRICAL
CATS DONT MAKE GOOD MUSIC
SO IM ALWAYS LOOKING
FOR A BALANCE OF BOTH.

NOW WHEN I WAS IN
MY TEENS, EARLY 20S
I WAS shytTING ON ANYTHING
THAT WASNT BARRED UP.

AT THE SAME TIME
I GO BACK AND LISTEN TO
A LOT OF shyt FROM THE 90S
THAT I USED TO THINK WAS TOUGH
AND IT SOUNDS SIMPLE TO ME NOW.

I don't rap or write but I fit the description of the type of listener you're talking about.

I call myself a "nerd" when it comes to rap. I'm obsessed with the technical aspect of rap/writing.

I'm the type of dude that rewinds bars countless times before letting the song continue.

I can't really listen to "simple" rap. It doesn't CHALLENGE my mind.

The type of rap I mainly listen to would be considered "rappity rap" I guess. It has to challenge my mind technically.

I can't get jiggy with a "vibe". If I want a vibe I listen to R&B or jazz.

When it comes to rap, I want to be blown away by rhyme schemes and different flows and patterns. Simple Dr.Suess rhymes does nothing for me.

I love AbAb/ AbbA/ multi-syllabic rhyme schemes. Nerd ish.

This for example is a mind-blowing pattern to me. Dude maintained the same rhyme scheme/cadence for the whole verse:

Fire, I’m a check it later definitely. I already know a couple dudes in here that get crazy, Chicago, Spliz, etc… I’m always open to hearing some fire, wherever I can get it

YEA THIS shyt IS TRASH.

ILL LISTEN TO A JEEZY SONG
OVER THIS ANY DAY.

HE RHYMED A BUNCH OF
WORDS TOGETHER WHILE
RAPPING ABOUT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

GOOD RHYMING ABILITY
BUT A BAD SONG WITH NO
MUSICAL VALUE.

I used to do freestyle battles in college.

There was definitely a time where I used to overanalyze raps but I paid more attention to how the overall product sounded because, while I was good at freestyling and rap battling, my ability to make songs was poor.

My hooks were mid. The beats that this dude used to make for me on Fruit Loops were mid. And the overall songs were mid.

That's when I realized how important song structure was to hip hop. You can have the greatest lyricism but, without the right song structure, it didn't mean much.

I used to strictly do punchline and battle raps too back then. Like I'd write nothing but witty puns for an entire song without much of an actual message.
I will take that right there 100 times out of 100 over the nigs who just be doing madd super duper multis but don’t be saying a damn thing at all…not even substance wise…I mean like nothing they’re saying is leading to anything 😭, just random multis like they just learned about multis. That shyt is too easy to do to be impressive, imo

I don't feel being an emcee affected
my listening enjoyment in a bad way. Alot of times I space out to rap as background music.

However - when something stands out, it stands out.

I was listening to Eminem and Dr. Dre's Say what you say like 7 times in a row yesterday.

There it makes the listening better because I pick apart flows.

Even as a producer it made me hone in on things sharper.

I'm committed to being positive so I don't hate on much rap.

I listen to Sexy Red and think how she put such simple words together and it fukked everyone up for months. I laugh at that.

Hoe rap I think has a style where they purposely act stupid it's funny...unless they really are brain dead lol 😳
