I posted this before but I see someone posted this on YouTube. This is Funk Flex on Hot 97 back in the Summer of 96. Mind you, this is smack dab in the middle of the Bad Boy era. Nas just dropped It Was Written. But Jay-Z also just dropped his debut. Was Jay really getting play like that??! Y’all listen for yourselves:

Lots of Nas, Wutang, Fugees, a little Jay thrown in. Sounds about right.

Its crazy how a song like I Gave You Power was getting radio play. A song as lyrically and conceptually dense would NEVER get that kind of burn today unless perhaps it was a Kendrick joint.

Also you had the Nas freestyles over those 80’s Hip Hop beats that were killing the mixtapes that Summer

Good time in hip hop.... I remember a doo wop mixtape I had that summer with all of the new songs on it, probably one of my fave mixtape I owned at the time.
