Former Lions QB Erik Kramer hospitalized after shooting himself in failed suicide attempt

Ex-NFL quarterback Erik Kramer was being treated for injuries Wednesday night after a reported suicide attempt at a Los Angeles-area motel.

Kramer reportedly shot himself Wednesday evening, but his injuries were not considered life threatening.

His former wife told NBC News she believes Kramer is suffering from depression in part as a result of head injuries suffered during his football career.

“He is a very amazing man, a beautiful soul, but he has suffered depression since he was with the Bears,” Marshawn Kramer told NBC News. “I can promise you he is not the same man I married.”

In 2011, Kramer’s son, Griffen, was found dead during his senior year of high school of a drug overdose.

Very sad to hear about these guys who 'change' according to loved ones, essentially means they're losing their minds and at alarmingly young ages. I know anyone who had an older relative go out that way understands. It's just a really unsettling experience. Couldn't even imagine it happening to middle ish aged men

its not really a reality of the game, more a reality of life. some people just decide to check out. is there any hard data that suggests an nfl player is more apt than joe schmoe to off himself? theres a select few depressed/mentally unstable people in all walks of life that just up and end it, and theres many more depressed/mentally unstable people that adapt and learn to live with it. i cant imagine what it feels like to make the choice to end your life, and you end up still here. whens the last boxer who killed himself?

That could be a reason that he would be depressed. Football is the easy scapegoat, but there's lots of reasons people get depressed.

imo thats just as likely, if not more, of being the main cause of his troubles. all those "was i a shytty parent, what could i have done better, was that my fault" etc thoughts probably go through your head when your seed dies. you dont need head trauma to feel depressed and haunted by something like that
