RIP Mr.Paul Tagliabue.
Under his reign the NFL both as a brand and sports league, became a social and cultural juggernaut whose popularity, clout and influence expanded far beyond the world of sports. Sunday football became a tradition and a staple for so many people. Some people even think the NFL managed to replace the place of religion and church on Sunday.
At the end of tenure in 2006, when Roger Goodell succeeded him and took over as commissioner, The NFL was not only the biggest and most popular sports league among most sports fans in North America, but also a worldwide brand enjoyed by many people in other continents. By then, The NFL not only ruled the world of sports but also ruled the world of pop culture and entertainment.
NFL is so culturally ingrained in the daily lives of people and is permanently in the fabric of society in such a convenient way unlike other sports leagues. And it will remain that way until maybe the end of this century. But we shouldn’t forget that things don’t stay popular forever . In the 1950s, baseball, horse racing and boxing were the most popular and relevant sports on this continent. And look at the state of popularity of these three sports in 2025, 70-75 years later. We should never take football dominance for granted and expect that it will always be popular. It’s a certainty that something else will dethrone it.
