Ten former National Hockey League players are claiming in a class-action lawsuit that the league hasn’t done enough to protect players from concussions.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in Washington, seeks damages to be determined at trial. The players are also seeking court-approved medical monitoring for their brain trauma and/or injuries, which they blame on their NHL careers.

The suit comes just three months after the National Football League agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits from thousands of former players who developed dementia or other concussion-related health problems.

The ex-hockey players claim that the NHL purposely concealed the risks of brain injuries faced by players, exposing them to unnecessary dangers.

These players should sign a contract before they enter any league acknowledging the risk associated with playing so that they can't sue. I'm tired of hearing multimillionaire athletes complaining that the sport they played in and earned millions doing didn't correctly tell them about the risks.

Kind of weird. Back in the eighties, you had an option to wear a helmet or not. Later on, it became mandatory.
Wayne Gretzky wore a kayak helmet. That Jofa helmet that he wore during his career and was a part of his signature look was a kayak helmet. That was not intended to be a hockey helmet. It just looked good because it didn't make your head look like a big pumpkin. It is a plastic shell with a nylon strap ring on the inside that suspends the helmet on the head. It had a chin strap and a very thin amount of padding on the inside. Thin as in 1 mm of foam padding. Nothing that could prevent a concussion.
I think the players need to look at suing the NHLPA because they come up with what the players want. There is no rule to have a half shield and it is actually against the rules to have a full-face protective mask/cage on a player unless it is being worn for a medical purpose. Basically, it is against the rules to have more protection for your face.
Goalies must wear a mask with padding and a caged area in front of the eyes, and are not allowed to wear the padding-less shell masks that were worn in the 70s and 80's.

Actually, every player going into the league is required to wear a visor. But I have no sympathy for hockey players. If it was up to them many of them wouldn't even wear helmets. Chris Pronger, one of the best defensemen in NHL history got his career ended after a puck to the eye. Why? Because he didn't want to wear a visor. One player almost died after getting his throat slashed by a skate. He wore a neck guard after that, but does anyone in hockey wear a neck guard? Nope.Hockey players are some of the most stubborn athletes on earth.

I didn't know that rule was enacted.
I play hockey. I wear a full-mask all the time. No one in the universe has the reflexes to block a deflect shot. I've been hit multiple times in the mask by a deflected puck.
