Missouri defensive end Michael Sam announced he was gay on Sunday evening, setting off a crush of reactions. Sam, a 6’2″, 260-pound senior who was a first-team All-American and defensive player of the year in the SEC, is expected to be drafted in the early rounds of the NFL draft in May, and could become the first publicly gay active player in the NFL.

After revealing his sexuality in an interview with The New York Times, Sam spoke with Brendon Ayanbadejo about coming out to his teammates in Missouri before the start of the 2013 season. Sam notes how liberated he felt. Ayanbadejo points out how significantly Sam’s performance improved.

From Fox Sports:

“€œI could go on campus and go around local gay bars in Columbia and not worry about anybody judging me,”€ Sam told me. “€œPrior to coming out, I would be in a local restaurant with my boyfriend and coaches would come in and I would feel insecure and want to sneak out.”

After telling his teammates, Sam achieved improved results on the field. Feeling free, the defensive end upped his sack total from 3½ in 2012 to 11½ as a senior.

Sam shares Missouri’s single-season sack record with the San Francisco 49ers’ Aldon Smith.

In the story, Ayanbadejo likens Sam to Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson, saying Sam’s announcement was a similarly extraordinary moment in the push for equality. Now, Sam’s announcement will test the NFL’s tolerance.

“We were there to celebrate his ground-breaking voyage that in many ways is similar to those of Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks — extraordinary moments in the push for equality.”

“To borrow from Neil Amstrong, this is one small step for gay men and one giant leap for the LGBTQ community,” Ayanbadejo said.

its just a trick to get us even more upset at the whole gay rights movement. Many of gay people know its nothing like the civil rights, its just the media trying to devil's advocate.

Personal I feel that we shouldnt worry about shyt that scare white people. its more important things to worry about than two people loving each other.

I'd agree with the Jackie Robinson comparison to an EXTENT. Not Rosa Parks.

Sports is a very taboo thing when it comes to images of dominance etc...gay rights is hitting a watershed moment when it comes to athlete perception.

when gay people go through these type of struggles then they'll have something to talk about

oh I came out of the closet and now people look at me funny, oh such struggle

They probably keep trying to make this comparison to piss of black people and we are falling for it. Everyone knows they don't have the same plight. Let's not fall into the bullshyt trap.
