France Rules Google Must Pay News Firms For Content

The U.S. tech firm said it would comply with the French competition authority verdict, which followed a complaint by unions representing French press publishers. "Google's practices caused a serious and immediate harm to the press sector, while the economic situation of publishers and news agencies is otherwise fragile," France's 'Autorite de la Concurrence' said in a statement.

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
lolsmh. so the press thinks we're not clicking on their articles because of a snippet summary that google has under the link?

"Last year, Google it would stop showing news snippets from European publishers on search results for its French users, to comply with a new European copyright law."

if anything that helps us know which article to click...

but then again..maybe the media just wants us to click through them all 1 by 1 until we find what we need. what do they care, they get their *click* whether it's deserved or not in that case.

No, I think Google stopped showing snippets to avoid paying the news agencies.

yeah that's what they did..but I'm questioning why the Media would be mad about the snippets?

Do they think it takes away traffic from their sites? The snippets are the main reason I click on shyt
I think they have a point. I'm less likely to click sometimes based on the summary, when in the past I would have had to click multiple headlines then determine if it was worth continuing to read.

On the other hand, you're right I'd just search on Twitter instead where they include a snippet if they weren't on Google. :russ:
