That was the heyday of not just Freemasonry, but fraternal organizations as a whole. A lot of tv shows back then had characters that belonged to fictional organizations based off the real ones. They were spoofing the ones that had animal names like the Elks, Moose, Eagles etc. The Masons actually do have a Water Buffalo degree that some jurisdictions confer just for fun with the hat and everything . I think some even do the Stonecutters from the Simpsons.
