Break down what he influenced.

Not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious.

Fred.
As a preface, he didnโ€™t do anything completely innovative, he took elements that had been used and formed a style aesthetic out of them.
Talking slick fly shyt over avant garde drumless loops. What became the Griselda sound.

I mean....

If that's so cool but I don't see the connection to Gibbs here. Gibbs been rapping since like 2009 and only a handful of his beats don't have drums.

The Griselda (especially WSG) thing I definitely see but the Gibbs comparison is kinda confusing.

I took Freddieโ€™s comments about creating the lane to be a reference to Griselda/Benny.

Great post.
Wasnโ€™t aware of the drumless loops from Jay Elec. Which songs were those? I didnโ€™t pay much attention to him because he never dropped an album.

I agree that RZA and others had drumless beats before Reloaded. My point is that Roc made it a โ€œthingโ€. He took something that had always been there in the cut and made it a style. Which pretty much sums up hip hop if you think about it :wow:

I also credit Roc with creating the lane because he was the most direct, recent influence on Grisleda and the whole goon movement.
Eh. While i agree he is a trendsetter in his way, i dont give him the full credit because anyone paying attention could see these styles coming/returning

Like i said, jay elects shyt is heavy no drums and standard boombap in the mainstream.

(2007)

(2008)

Thats just off top. Id say atleast 1/5th of his entire catalog is drumless. Brought to the table way before roc. He didnt even drop marcberg yet andbthat style was way diff than his new one.

As far as who made it a style first? It was always a wu style, one of dozens.

Thats why in the wutang show rza dropped a line saying he was the first producer to not use drums when they showed the making of all that i got is you.

It most likely was in reference to them but why people assume he meant some drumless shyt, I have no idea. That's not even what he does.

If I had to guess what he meant, he's probably talking about creating a "brand" as a street rapper and all the merch that comes with it. Which is obviously how Griselda built their name up. With limited releases, concert specific shirts, collector items, etc.

Gibbs was doing that 10 years ago. The original Madlib EP he did only had 500 copies released, prior to it being made public.
