Being that Young, with that much hype, it takes a certain mental ability to ignore that hype once your in the Pros. Because while your special, you get distracted by voices and mentally you start thinking that you don't need to evolve your skill set because your special ability can trump that deficit. Being labelled as well as the next Pele is such a gravity well, because that is one of NAMES.

Could he have become a star. I would like to think so, but at the time MLS was in need of megastars for a weak brand. MLS is still a secondary league, but now it's stable and I think if this was Freddy's first year, this year, the result would be different.

He didn’t develop athletically. Soccer is different from American sports where you can project athleticism at a young age. Soccer it’s up in the air and you usually don’t see guys make a jump until their early 20’s. That’s why there are conspiracy theories that he was older than reported.

Here’s him styling on Uruguay, Poland and Brazil at the U-20’s. Clearly he had the skill but he never had the athleticism and work ethic. Also a big thing in soccer is motor. Can you press, can you defend etc. Adu was never good at it.

Brazil had Marcelo and Willian. Uruguay had Cavani and Suarez. Guys that became all-time greats. Adu became a journeymen. It happens. I wouldnt blame US soccer though.
