It's one thing to decriminalise, but under no circumstances should a government hand out harmful substances like heroin to people. Wtf :gucci: It's like handing out cigarettes and alcohol for free. A government's job is to get people off that shyt, not hand it out for free and create more addicts

Theres nothing that supports that theory. I and many other people could get heroin tomorrow with relative ease. I have zero desire to ever do so. Read this when you get a chance they talk about ultimately full legalization will still be better than decriminalization

Portugal’s radical drugs policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?

Getting something off the street, and getting something in a store are completely different. Different people have different morals. If it’s sold in dispensaries, it makes people feel less “crime-ish”. That’s how I got started on gummies.

Anecdotal evidence isn’t enough evidence to build a consensus for something. We know what works and decriminalization/legalization is the path forward :yeshrug:

This is Canada. We pay extremely high taxes and again I will be paying for drugs to help these people out? Middle class has been completely left behind by this country.

why are you so convinced that providing addicts with 'free' drugs is more costly than the war on drugs?

militarizing the police is expensive, raids are expensive, surveillance operations are expensive.

all the costly resources needed to respond to drug-related crimes are expensive.

the property damage, the stolen goods, etc.

imprisoning people for drug-related crimes is expensive.

the middle-class was hood-winked into financing the war on drugs. enriching monied interests on both sides.

support a position that actually removes the financial incentive of continuing this terrible policy called the war on drugs.

Not trying to live in a city like this, or be anywhere near a city that does this.
Vancouver been ahead of the drug war for years

one of the first places to have distributed needles and clean injection sites.

I don't particularly understand this move but to say you don't want to be in a city cuz of it while in America.... breh. Guns >>>>> drugs in terms of fukking up a livable city.

Vancouver for all it's junkies has always been at top of the list of world class cities.

If anything this should be a wake up call to dealers and the abundant use of fentanyl, they fukked up their own market so bad with overdoses that a city is willing to cut them out completely and supply cleaner drugs as a way to mitigate overdoses. End goal is still to get em off drugs but you also can't pretend people won't keep using while they taper off.

you a staunch conservative you have a problem with rental protections for tenants because you a landlord and now drug outreach programs. I mean the list goes on... :heh:
please tell me how you In Toronto will be paying for drugs provided by a non profit in B.C. this isn't a federal initiative just like injection site programs weren't

letting your BAD politics fukk up your optics and perception.

I support decriminalisation and even legalisation. But I have to draw the line at government subsidised hand outs of toxic and poisonous substances like tobacco, alcohol, and heroin, amongst others. If people want that shyt they should have to pay through the nose for it. And they will receive a regulated, quality product for their money.

You go to a tobacconist or a bottle shop and you can pick up a fine cigar or a fine bottle of wine, but it'll cost you. The government is not out here giving out Monte Cristos or Château Lafite-Rothschild 1949 to anyone who asks for it.

Heroin should be the same. It should be manufactured by companies who, if they cut it with rat poison or whatever other deadly substance, will get sued to oblivion. Just like alcohol and tobacco companies are obliged to put out a product that won't instantly kill a user. And the product should be sold at premium prices in licenced shops. The premium should come from a government tax levied on the sale of heroin, and not from company profiteering. And such tax revenue as is raised from sales should be channelled into treatment and diversion programmes for addicts.

I can get behind that kind of legalisation. If you take the criminal element out of the drugs trade you take out a lot of the harm caused by it. When it's street legal then the only concern is with public health and not with crime and public safety.

But Vancouver is going way past that and I can't agree with it at all.

That question was asked in bad faith. Wasn't a question to start an honest dialogue. So won't take the bait.

I would suggest you research what has been going on in Portugal for 2 decades. There is a litany amount of data on it.

The only argument that one could even make is there might be a cultural aspect that can't be duplicated or quantified but other than that the facts speak for themselves.

This is a country with a population the size of l.a county. I don't think we can apply this policy to America. A country where people actually work. Americans can't afford distractions that come with a drug problem.

The Portuguese are a lazy people. They can afford to be high all day.

  • Statistics compiled by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) indicate that between 2001 and 2007, lifetime prevalence rates for cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, ecstasy, and LSD have risen for the Portuguese general population (ages 15-64) and for the 15-34 age group.
  • Past-month prevalence figures show increases from 2001 to 2007 in cocaine and LSD use in the Portuguese general population as well as increases in cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamine use in the 15-34 age group.
  • Drug-induced deaths, which decreased in Portugal from 369 in 1999 to 152 in 2003, climbed to 314 in 2007 – a number significantly higher than the 280 deaths recorded when decriminalization started in 2001.
  • Despite Cato’s assertion that increases in lifetime prevalence levels among the general population are “virtually inevitable in every nation,” EMCDDA data indicate that other countries, including Spain, have been able to achieve decreases in lifetime prevalence rates for cannabis and ecstasy use between 2003 and 2008.

Weird thing about conservatives is they claim to fiscally responsible but consistently go against the most fiscally responsible options because their insane conservative beliefs not based in actual reality or based on numbers or science don’t agree with it. Are they fiscally responsible or do they only make decisions based on emotions and just lie about that all the time :jbhmm:

its one thing to help single parents or the disabled but....have a legitimate job and pay taxes to "help" junkies.

and people who think drugs should be legal are really misinformed or uneducated.

what evidence do you have that it will create more addicts?

a governments job is to enforce laws and ensure the well-being of it's citizens. the war on drugs is a terrible policy thats harmed way more people than actual drug-addicts. tens of thousands of people are victimized by drug-addicts in one way or another everyday. costing people time, money and their mental health dealing with crimes committed by drug-addicts. we have the data going back decades that a lot of addicts become criminals to feed their addiction. the government can stop that by providing the drugs for free and providing services to help them quit using drugs as well.

So our views are basically the same. Your issue is you’d prefer to see privatization of drugs sales with tough government regulations. I mean I have no qualms with that but I’d prefer to not put drug sales in the hands of big pharma considering the abusive practices (price gouging opioid deaths, etc) they’ve taken part in over the years. They don’t deserve to be rewarded in such fashion and ultimately killing and nationalizing that industry would benefit the country as a whole.

But that’s an entirely different conversation
