Police sketch of suspected sniperWIXOM, Mich.—Drivers in southeastern Michigan are back on edge after a spate of new shootings at cars along or near Interstate 96, including one over the weekend that injured a driver for the first time.

The latest scare came Monday morning when a vehicle was hit by a projectile on U.S. Route 23, near the I-96 corridor. Authorities later cast doubt that the damage was from a bullet, but an investigation into the incident closed traffic on the highway and prompted a lockdown at a nearby school district that lasted several hours.

A law-enforcement task force is investigating reports of 25 roadway shootings across four counties in the region west of Detroit since Oct. 16. The effort is being led by police in Wixom, Mich., where 10 of the shootings occurred.

On Monday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. More than 100 people are working full-time on the task force, officials said at a Monday news conference.

No one has been killed in the shootings, and no arrests have been made, but police released a sketch of a suspect. Hundreds of tips have poured in and police have made a number of vehicle stops in search of the suspect.

In an interview, Wixom Police Director Clarence Goodlein said the suspect appears to be acting alone during the day and early evening, using a handgun to shoot mainly into oncoming traffic from a black midsize car, possibly a Toyota Camry or Oldsmobile Alero that is about 10 to 12 years old.
