DMX was THE guy from '98 to mid-2000. Then Eminem and Nelly had the top spot for a while until 50 took the torch in 2003. Jay-Z was never the top dog, imo.
Where are those guys now, vs where Jay is? Em is still big, still doing massive tours. That’s it. I def believe Jay’s marketing inflated his relevance but end of the day he’s still here making big records and doing massive tours.

BP3 and WTT saved Jay as far as I’m concerned. But hey, he made it happen (with massive assists from Kanye) so what can you say.

What you said has nothing to do with '98-01. Jay's longevity is up there with anyone but he was never the biggest artist at any one time.

nah..

50 had most of 2003

Jay had the spotlight for a few months off the strength of him dropping his "retirement" album. ( I think that was just a marketing ploy as well but that's another topic)

03 was also X's last big year too.

fukk no
50 Cent had the highest 1st Week Sales in 2003. (872,000 units)

In 2003, 50 Cent nearly had sold twice as many albums in the 1st Week than Jay Z Black Album.

Jay Z Black Album had the 3rd highest first week sales in 2003.

X was the top spitta in 98-00, til Nelly (pop crowd) and Eminem (pop and emo crowd) took over, like someone else stated. Couldn't escape X from 98 til 04 or so, bruh was everywhere. Plus hoes dug him bigtime

but he was never the biggest artist at any one time.

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? This gets posted on here all the time and it's like, really? It's a lot of artists who were never the biggest at any point in time. You could go back year by year and have an artist who was the biggest each year. Then when you look at it in totality, only a few of them were consistent. Only a few rappers were ever the biggest rapper at the level at which Doggystyle era Snoop Dogg was, but Snoop is constantly bashed because he hasn't been consistent.

98, 4 of the top 10 sellers were from No Limit.. They don't get enough credit for the history they made.

2006 he had the highest first week numbers of any album that year with Kingdom Come, though that year felt like it belonged to T.I.

Hov otherwise was super consistent for a long ass time.

Yeah this...Wayne also in 06 was arguably more popular but he didn't drop a solo album. But Hov was always consistent and was always looked at as the best selling lyricist from 98-03 and 06-11 runs he had.

Jay was big but what held him back from being #1 was he had a lot of die hard haters early on (people don't seem to remember this it was half mad Pac fans half people just not fukking with him pre-1998 Jay perception was MAD different)...and he never really got that female market he def had female fans but like X or Nelly? Hell No
