How the hell would that hurt workers when theybhave a set of skills they can take to competitors from a company who treats em like shyt?

Non-compete agreements prevent parties from performing actions that would compete with another party. If you are a worker with a particular set of skills, you wouldn't be able to go another company to compete with the company that you signed the agreement with. It is literally meant to stifle competition:skip:

If a software developer who signed a non compete to work at Meta and is making 150k gets headhunted by Twitter who offers 250k to do the same thing, that software developer could not accept the offer by Twitter because they would be bound to their no-compete.

The developer lost out on a large raise to work elsewhere. Twitter lost out on an experienced worker that helps their business.

Another example is pro wrestling. WWE has a 90 day non compete clause in their contracts. When a wrestler leaves the company, they cannot work for another wrestling company for 90 days. That wrestler is losing out on potentially higher compensation to work for another wrestling company immediately after leaving WWE.

Also, lets tack on trainings/certs/ career building as well, a company can't go 'you do this, you gotta stay for 4 years, if you leave early you pay us for all that shyt you acquired' if this rule goes through.

Or you can't build your own amazon or some competing business similar to whatever amazon does cause you got a non-compete that binds you from attempting it.

Corps about to fight this shyt tooth and nail. With the way recruiters be hounding you on LinkedIn the last thing these companies need is for non-competes to go away. Salaries and working conditions are about to make a huge come up though.

Im stuck even after this goes through though because of a loophole due to us getting stock options. Unless they somehow get around that, I imagine most companies will adopt that approach to side step the spirit of the rule.
