So I learned that Indian women used to practice

Sati (Devanagari: सती, the feminine of sat "true"; also spelled suttee)[3] refers to a funeral ritual within some Asian communities in which a recently widowed woman commits suicide by fire, typically on the husband's funeral pyre.

This act of sacrifice was then followed by women in India to demonstrate their love, devotion and piety for their husband.

Strange thread, but ok....

I've been to a couple of Native American funerals, so I've seen and participated in rituals. The most common ritual is that Natives cut their scalp bald when a family member dies. The second ritual, which I participated in, is called "The Last Handshake." At the burial site, after the last rights have been given and the casket lowered into the ground, a handful of dirt from the burial plot is tossed into the hole, first by every family member, then by friends. After everyone has given their handshake, the males in the family will finish covering the plot, as it has always been customary for Native Americans to bury their own.
