Popularity doesnt account for skills these days. Unlike the 90's the most popular artist usually are the ones who make the most garbage music. This is because unlike the 90's artist cared more about the culture and being the best lyricist as opposed to being the fan favorite. And that was appreciated by fans in return. Future is winning but he is not representing hiphop. He is a pop star. And thats where the truth lies.

Normally I don't acknowledge managers but future really owes a debt of gratitude to Anthony Saleh. Prior to Anthony managing future was on a lot of artists hooks and watering down his sound, similar to Akon and T-pain. It just seems like this new approach of feeding the people directly with music, he's almost like a hot new artist and now has the tours and sales to match.
