"I'm not sure if this will work for everyone but its worth a try. I've been playing GTA Online all day with very FEW issues (jobs aren't allowing me to play with other players but I can play fine by myself). It saves everything just fine & is easily (but slowly) accessible through both the character wheel and the pause menu in story mode. First of all, note which issue your getting. I restarted the game numerous times and finally got the the point where the game had (to some extent) saved my character but I kept running into glitches and could not get the race to start. The way I solved this was

Suggestion 1: Go into your system storage and delete the update file. Restart the game and the update should re-download. Try GTA Online again and create a character. This should at least get you to the race loading screen.

Suggestion 2. Start the game and disconnect from Xbox Live while the game is running. This should take you to the beginning of the game. Attempt to enter GTA online and when it asks would you like to save, select no and turn OFF auto save. Continue to GTA online and recreate a character if necessary.

Suggestion 3. Connect to Xbox Live & restart the game. Enter story mode and turn auto save back on. Then go to the online tab and select swap character (i think). From here, you should be able to see the character you've previously created. DELETE this character. Now try GTA Online, creating a new character and what not.

By the time I went through all of this, IT WORKED! = ) After I completed the race and the first mission, I swapped between passive mode frequently if that meant anything. I've gotten 12 people's GTA Online working so far using the steps above (some only had to do 1 or 2 steps while some had to do them all) so I'm hoping this helps someone. Let me know!"
