Gamers often complain that a game series needs a new engine, are there games that change engines?

Im talking like Madden, 2k, COD,etc games with yearly iterations where the number 1 complaint is that the game engine it out of date and news an upgrade.

Live was delayed, canceled, etc and came back with same Live engine.

What games have went to a new engine during a series?

Haven't just about every series updated or changed the engine at some point?

Madden is graphically the worst looking sports game on the market.

FIFA does it, I don't know why Madden can't

FIFA is debuting it's new engine for 17 and Madden isn't which is retarded. I think Madden needs to get rid of their development team because they're lazy af with no comp. At least 2K gives us new shyt every year with the same development cycle as Madden, they just recycle shyt in Madden. I bet they're finally gonna have a story mode in Madden 19' :mjlol:

There is a visual difference between Gears 1 & 2..... Even though in hindsight I think The original game had a grittyness to it that the other 2 had not... even tho the visuals are smoother in the others...

People who aren't game engine programmers have no idea what goes into a game engine and they just repeat what they read. Yearly games probably get their engines upgraded, and "new" engines probably aren't built from scratch because there is no reason to throw all the work away.
The Arkham games didn't need it...

WB games has literally made millions off of it...

GTA series made literally billions off of a very simple engine.

Can't really beat the numbers.
Props to both of you for these post

This is what I'm looking for? Is it even feasible to create a new engine for a game

I don't know that's why I'm asking the question

The Main complaint about Madden is that it plays the same and feels the exact same as it did 10 years ago

Most of the time when a game jumps to a new gen, they use a new engine. I guess when games "feel the same" it's because the engine just feels old. It's like Fallout 4 still uses the Skyrim engine and even though it's been upgraded, their's still that "feel" there.

It's why I could look at a game like say COD and even though there's technically "new shyt" each year, it looks and feels like the same damn game anyway.

There's a difference between engine programming and gameplay programming. Madden games could feel different by changing the gameplay code without touching the engine.

Most games keep their engine from game to game, but a lot of the times games that are praised for their sequels usually added so much to their engine that it doesn't feel like the same old same old, like the Mass Effect trilogy feels like completely different games from each other but they use the same engine.

Difference is in yearly games the dev cycle is relatively short and you'll find little to no improvements to the game and the emphasized additions to the game aren't really groundbreaking, like in most sports games. And then you have games like AC which added almost nothing to the game engine from year to year but instead opted to change the scenery.

Not this console generation. Pretty much every one of the tried and true franchises that were around before haven't adopted a new engine. The games that have pretty much have been reboots mostly like Battlefront.
