Yeah i know :gurl:

To some, they might seem an unlikely twosome: a former president and former first lady from two different administrations, different political parties, different generations and different upbringings.

But George W. Bush tells PEOPLE that he feels a real fondness for Michelle Obama.

“She kind of likes my sense of humor. Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like,” says Bush, in an interview to launch his first art book and new exhibit, Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, a collection of his paintings of post-9/11 war veterans.

Bush, 70, notes that he was regularly seated beside Obama, 53, at official events like Nancy Reagan’s memorial service, an interfaith memorial service for Texas police officers last year, and the September 2016 dedication ceremony in Washington, D.C., to mark the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. There, photos of the two of them cuddling on stage went viral.

“I can’t remember where else I’ve sat next to her, but I probably have a few wise cracks and she seemed to like it okay,” says Bush. “I needle her a little bit and around her, I’m fairly lighthearted. [The Obamas] are around serious people all the time and we just took to each other.”

Asked about that sweet moment at the Smithsonian, he says: “When I saw her, it was a genuine expression of affection.”

George W. Bush on His Unlikely Friendship With Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama and George W. Bush have developed an affectionate relationship over the last 8 years, culminating a viral photo of the pair hugging in 2016.

And then there’s the work with military personnel, military families and veterans that Obama did as first lady through her Joining Forces initiative with Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the former vice president. That’s right up Bush’s alley. He has dedicated most of his post-presidency to the cause of wounded warriors—ensuring through wellness and employment programs at the George W. Bush Presidential Center that those wounded in war get the health and career assistance they need to make a full and successful transition to civilian life.

There, he and his wife Laura say, is where they hope to work with both Michelle and Barack Obama.

“I think they’re interested in, also, doing things with our troops of course now in their after-life, as I call it,” says Mrs. Bush.

Adds the former president: “It’s going to take them a while to find their footing and figure out how they’re going to do what they want to do. But if there’s a way to be symbiotic, we’ll do so.”

And millions in Africa.

Bush a Fond Presence in Africa for Work During and Since His Presidency

While George W. Bush is remembered at home for war, terrorism and national security, in Africa he is seen as a lifesaver who as president helped arrest a deadly epidemic and promoted development of impoverished lands. Now out of office, he has devoted his post-presidency in part to continuing to aid the world’s poorest continent.

For a leader whose administration was consumed by conflict and death, Mr. Bush’s former advisers say the Africa ventures offer a way to focus on life. As his travels center on lifting up the destitute, they evoke the presidency that might have been had there been no Sept. 11 attacks and no war in Iraq, a presidency that might have been free to focus more on the “compassionate conservative” agenda he embraced on his way to the White House.

Mr. Bush does not entertain what-ifs, but casts his enduring interest in Africa as an extension of public service. “I’m here to serve and I believe strongly that with power and wealth comes a duty to serve the least,” he told CNN during a stop in Zambia

While in office, Mr. Bush started the Millennium Challenge Corporation to direct aid to African states that tried to reform corrupt and undemocratic governments. He also initiated the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or Pepfar, which invested tens of billions of dollars to fighting H.I.V., and later tackled malaria and tuberculosis.

By the time he left office, millions were receiving retroviral drugs keeping them alive, and polls showed approval of the United States at 65 percent in Tanzania, and in the 70s and 80s in other African countries. During a final trip as president in early 2008, Mr. Bush was warmly greeted by huge crowds of the sort he never saw at home anymore.

Matt Damon: 'I Would Kiss George W. Bush on the Mouth' for His AIDS Work

You know, PEPFAR is an incredible thing just in terms of how many lives it saved. These ARVs have a Lazarus effect on people. You see a picture of them before and then you see them vibrant, alive, working. Their whole family has been dragged down by the illness and now this. I went on a trip in 2006 (to Africa) and I just had a sense of national pride going around, talking to these people, and they were so happy, they would say, "America," and I was saying, "Yeah, our president did that, and it's terrific." It's such an obvious connected thing. People aren't going to hate you when you're saving their lives.

Yep I think this is true they say dikk knew how to manipulate him and it wasn't until late in his presidency that he figured it out.
