they had 2 great performances, but much of what he points out in that 538 article like goal differential, the elo, etc is based off 2 results. the man down 4-0 beatdown of portugal, and the brazil side just not giving a rats ass once they went down 2-0. they played well, obviously, but they hardly looked like the best side in the history of the game for most of that tourney

algeria is no good. out of all the games germany was by far the biggest favorite in their game vs algeria. toughest opponent? :beli:

Germany had tough time against very quick, aggressive, and opponents that are individually skilled. Argentina would have won but they had poor execution through out the World Cup and last nights game was just another example of bad execution.

I really expected to see the article being linked from espn. I'm disappointed and shocked.

I think that one of Nate Silver's interns wrote this dumb article. They scored an unprecedented 7 goals against an extremely weak Brazilian side, thatsa +6 goal difference concentrated in one game. Ghana and Algeria are decent but tactically poor sides but they gave Germany a lot of problems. Say Ghana took their easy chances and we'd have a completely different winner or Higuain and Palacious score their gifts and this turns out to be another typical German side. Lots of ifs and coulda but that is emblematic of the meh champs that they are in a low scoring sport.

Yeah, bullshyt. Argentina lost that game, moreso than Germany winning. Higuan, Messi, and Palacious all missed out on some gimme goals.
