That's the general perception, but the reality is that most spiders that you let stay alive in your house, die before it actually does something useful, and that's because there arnt really that many bugs in your crib as there would be outside; so while that spider you let live is chilling in a corner web waiting for something, it dies way before that realistically happens. Your best bet of it being useful to you is just catching it, then putting it back outside.
