You remove the possibility compensating with more spending no?
Not so much celebrities running... but controversy becomes a way of increasing visibility/coverage with spending caps. This seems to benefit candidates like Trump.

Right now i believe Biden has over 100 more to spend on ads and other campaign needs then Trump... and it doesnt seem unfair or something in need of reform to me. The incumbent is already at an advantage and you can never really "level the playing field".
The candidate who spends the wins like 90% of the time.
And also it effects policy once in office, if a big campaign donor is looking for an advantage in the marketplace donating to someone likely to win helps them with advantageous legislation.
Money is like 100 x more a problem than fukkin' celebrity. Nice try tho.

the ether
I was thinking of this when listening to NPR talk about the California ballot initiatives this morning.

The money being spent is insane. And its coming from very limited sources. Some corporations/interest groups are spending around $100 million BY THEMSELVES, just to push one ballot measure.

How the fukk is there any chance for this to be decided fairly when 0.001% of citizens can spend $100 million to get what they want and 99.9% of us have basically zero real influence on the process?

Wouldn’t this favor those in position to offer favors?
Jobs, admissions, etc.
Lobbying isn’t limited to cash... and removing money seems like it’ll just make lobbying more difficult to track.
Quid Pro Quo as purely favors is also harder to deliver for parties involved. They'd all have to be immaterial promises and harder to compound agendas with job positions vs cash. Also harder to provide collateral

Like okay Exxon could offer a job position, but if thats your move what happens when x, y, and z companies offer that too? With cash everyone can lump together and prove allegiance & collateral instantly. Nothing beats cash.

I'm actually gonna go read cato institute and see if this is the new republican strategy.
It isn't just the Republicans. One of Capital's strategies these days is to shut down any criticism of their oligarchy by accusing anyone to the left of Margaret Thatcher of being racist against gifted young entrepreneurs of color who just want to go get the bag. Note how OP claims minorities would be harmed by getting big money out of politics.

imagine constantly dap fishing using terms like systemic oppression/white supremacy, weaving in some fake populace rhetoric but becomes indifferent/complacent/submissive when the topic is about regulating the fundamental tool used to undermine/manipulate democracy/civil rights/justice/equality

The pandemic proves that government action can be streamlined and lean towards efficiency when forced to. The same can be done with campaign financing if citizens are willing to put aside their own elitist ambitions and stop juezling for their fav political party
