You know how you'll go to a party, a dinner, or some other social gathering, and people will just be on their phones half the time? This is something I've tried to stop doing over the last few months. I'll look at it for the time, and if someone texts me I'll look, but if it's not important I'll just ignore it. I guess I'm trying not to be one of those people who gets lost in their phones when they're with people ... it looks awkward.

Anyone else tried to get better at this?

I remember a time when people didn't have their faces buried in their cellphones every minute (in before :flabbynsick:) but everyone should try leaving their phones at home at least once when going to a gathering, especially if they have trouble approaching others.

Social like a gathering, yes. It's pretty inconsiderate, you could text at home. Just "out" in a casual setting, it doesn't matter as much. Some people are handsy and need to at least appear to be doing something, it's not actually them putting up a wall between them and others, they'll usually put the phone away when someone approaches them.
