Its humorous to me that folks on social media think they can police (the irony) who performs and doesn't at the Super Bowl via public shaming on Twitter. Someone actually tweeted that Gladys Knight is now muted. I had to laugh cuz anyone who is on social media talking about muting artists, is not in the age demographic of Gladys Knight's core audience. It's just another example of a nobody on social media that got a few retweets, a few likes, etc., and now all of a sudden they see themselves as a modern day cyber Eldridge Cleaver. Can't make this sh!t up.
Something else too, I don't think this boycott is working out too well. In the same sense that I don't think Kaep's protest was well thought out, I don't think this social media lead boycott of a juggernaut like the NFL was well thought out. I like Kaep, and there's no question he's been black-balled from the league unjustly. However, his efforts to shed light on police brutality (really state sanctioned homicide) turned into a distraction resulting from his methods of choice. As a result his intent was lost as the message was fumbled. Here's the thing, you already knew white people weren't going to give a damn. That's a given. Here's the other thing, his methods didn't resonate the hearts of enough Black folks either. It went from police misconduct to what are Kaep's rights? In a league that is mostly Black, if the majority of the players aren't going to ride with you because of your methods and not because of the message, you can't expect the majority of Black fans to do so either.
Which brings us to the legends in their own minds on social media. You can't expect to shame Black celebrities into not performing at the halftime show when the majority of the players who perform from quarters 1-4 are themselves Black. You also can't expect to shame the Black celebrities or players when the majority of Black fans who watched football before Kaep was black-balled, continue to watch it even after he was black-balled. This is a classic case of being self-righteous and misguided and it all boils down to methods and a lost message. There's a failure to communicate.
