RAPPERS always blurred the lines between the STREETS and ENTERTAINMENT
so many ASSUMED they were good in the streets simply cause they were "affiliated" or cool with certain street cats or dope boys
im a triple OG who hung around mobile deejays and promoters i slanged mixtapes too so witnessed alot of fukkery in hip hop that didn't getting publicized
i remember seeing DANA DANE in fort green with the same souped up Volvo who bragged about on records .....
you gotta understand this was the golden era of ART but not COMMERCE unlike the 90s these dudes weren't getting HUGE ADVANCES.from the labels cause RAP was still considered a gimmick by the majors..and many couldn't afford to cop the minimansion out in jersey or conneticut ...many still LIVED IN THE SAME HOODS they rapped about
SLICK RICK and BIZMARKIE made that same foolish mistake...both rocked mad jewels in the streets i remember seeing Slick Rick out in Ravenswood Projects out in queens back in the day when i was with my first girlfriend ..he was visiting some people ....and Biz always had on trunk jewelry...
but the tragic irony is BOTH OF THEM GOT STUCK UP for thier jewels multiple times
because they hung around street cats and thought they had the same leverage as street cats in the hood as they explain in this video they basically BRAGGING about hanging with "mad drug dealers" ..smh:
i remember being in Atlanta that time LL COOL J performed in the Omni back in that time...the atlanta hawks would always throw concerts on the weekend after home games.....(run dmc..atlantic starr, etc)
anyway a promoter i knew named Tico from cobb county had to rush LL and his crew to safety because LL was getting shot at in the bluff nearby in midtown ATL because "supposedly" LL and his boys was trying to cop some "nose candy" after the show
yeah the golden era was CRAZY fukk what all these writers and psuedo purists love to romanticize about it..
mofos was getting got and shot !!
