The Newark police lieutenant accused of gunning down his estranged wife and wounding her boyfriend Sunday night told authorities that he “blacked out” upon arriving at the Jefferson home the couple had shared and suspected another man was in her bedroom, according to court records.
John G. Formisano, a 24-year member of the Newark Police Department, told investigators, however, that he remembered shooting Christine Formisano and the man multiple times, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NJ Advance Media. The court records identify the 40-year-old boyfriend by his initials T.S. and noted that the Formisanos’ young children were home at the time of the shooting.
“After entering the residence, Formisano stated that he began to suspect that (Christine Formisano) had a male guest in the bedroom, at which point he ‘blacked out.’ He stated that he recalls firing his weapon numerous times at C.F. and T.S.," according to the affidavit.
John Formisano, 49, faces charges of murder, attempted murder and endangering the welfare of their two children. He is being held in a psychiatric unit at St. Claire’s Behavioral Health in Boonton.
The court records reveal new details on how the fatal shooting unfolded late Sunday at the home on Mirror Place that John Formisano bought nearly a decade ago, and notes that the couple was in the process of divorcing.
Shortly before the 11:21 p.m. shooting, John Formisano called the house to speak with his estranged wife, according to an account T.S. provided to police that was detailed in the affidavit. She then saw a flashlight outside the residence, T.S. told authorities.
John Formisano, who was residing with relatives, told police he went to the house to drop off eyeglasses for one of their kids, court records state.
Christine Formisano locked the bedroom door with T.S. inside and soon after, T.S. told police he heard her shout “he’s got a gun” and “call 911," authorities said.
John Formisano broke down the bedroom door and shot T.S. multiple times, hitting him in the thigh, hand, arms and abdomen, authorities said.
Christine Formisano fled and tried to gain entry to two nearby homes, but her husband caught up with her on the front porch of a house two doors away and shot her to death, authorities said. A woman told police she saw Formisano firing his handgun multiple times outside the home, authorities said.
Formisano was hit in the abdomen, arm, leg, hand and head, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Surveillance cameras recorded at least part of the incident, police said.
