I’ve basically hit a salary wall. I’ve also pinned myself into a corner as I hate my job but because of how much I make it’s damn near impossible to leave and I can’t go any higher because I don’t have a degree.

After looking at potential schools I chose to go with Western Govoners University. It’s totally online, it’s accredited, it’s cheap and more importantly there are no restrictions on how fast you can complete a course. I plan on finishing before I turn 42 and then I can start applying for six figure positions with confidence.

Nice hope you accomplish your goal breh. I’m turning 28 in a few days and was feeling :flabbynsick: about going to college. My job is trash but they offer to pay for my first 2 years of college. I’m thinking about going myself :ld:

Unless you got connections you will reach a level where you won’t make any significant pay increases via promotion. And you might not be able to leave to make more depending on your current salary at the time.

At this point I have 3 choices.

1. Stay and collect the 2.5% pay increase each year.

2. Leave and take less money (I currently make over 80k per year).

3. Get my degree and try to leave.

Idk how long you’ve been outta school you might be Jordan with the wizards status when them classes hit :patrice:. Good luck tho

2012. I got about 30 credits. If I would’ve stuck with it I would’ve had an MBA by now. I wanted to become a CPA.

I did some online courses through university, and the best part of them is you can finish them faster than normal, and you also don't have to worry about all the drama and politics of campus life (especially as an older dude).

I actually prefer online schooling now (gonna be applying to Grad school next month).

No shytty lectures of teacher's givin you their personal opinions, no shytty classmates, no drama, no politics. just straight to the point with the coursework.

I prefer that. You do lose out on the networking and building, but I ain't worried about that where I'm at in life. I got a good paying job, I just want more opportunities.

I was listening to a podcast which talked about the exact same thing. Once u hit the Max salary for your particular job you're painted in a corner cuz if u hate it u can't leave because anything else will be a pay cut.

I did it for EXACTLY the same reason. If math is a problem, khanacademy.org is the BEST tutorial site I've found to brush-up and practice so you won't have to deal with remedial courses. For other classes, I don't know what to tell you. I got my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. Also, don't worry about being the 'Old Man' in the class. Most of the kids I was with were fresh outta high school and couldn't even shave or talk to girls. The ONE issue I had is walking around all the younger females on the campus, but, since I lived about 20 minutes away from the campus with my wife, she got all the built-up lust and enjoyed every minute/hour of it...........:shaq:

If you don't have an entrepreneurial aspirations than going to school can work, I am not sure though how all online only schools are looked at, I know a few people that went to University of Phoenix and some even got masters from there and it did absolutely nothing for their career, and at 42 any company is going to favor a younger candidate with no experience than a 42 year old one. If you were going for say nursing or IT, the online school wouldn't matter as they are constantly looking for those positions. Accounting (if that is what you are after still) has quite a bit of competition from the traditional colleges (which are still significantly more favored when compared to online schools). If you want to be in the financial arena, financial planners will be in demand with the baby boomers and millennials getting older.

That's if you're going for entry level positions. A regional manager for example requires 10+ years of experience plus a degree. It really all depends. And if your finesse game is on point you can get in.

Yeah true, from your post I was assuming you were looking for a brand new career, but it sounds like you are already in the financial field, but I would still be a little careful with the online only schools but go for it if you see it working.

I did my hike work on the school (western governors university). It's regionally accredited. However the is a downside in terms of perusing a CPA. It's missing a specific accreditation that new York requires. New Jersey doesn't require it. So it's the difference of wanting to practice in New York or New Jersey.

I'm going for upper management gigs. Where theyre not going to hire a young grad. Once you get my age, your career path has to be focused. There's employees at my job in their late 30s or early 40s to mid 50s making no more than 12 bucks an hour. No education and no will to improve yet complain about not getting paid enough. It's sad.

Online schools require more discipline and commitment which is an easy sell. Instead of looking at it as a weakness it can be a strengh.

Good luck, im 36 and this my last semester for my bachelor's degree. Im in the same position as you. I can't leave my job because im at a pretty good salary for my position but i cant go any where without this credential. Keep plugging away each semester and add some certifications. That's what im doing. After B.A, gonna get certification and pursue masters.
