Am I the only one that gets annoyed when I hear announcers, reporters, and sports talk radio heads talk about teams making a bowl game as something noteworthy? Today on the radio I hear that RUTGERS IS BOWL BOUND!!

This is a team that's in 6th place out of 7 team in their division in the Big 10. They're 6-4 with one win against an FCS team (Howard) and another against Tulane (3-7 in the American conference). This is a BAD team, but because the bowl games have now been expanded to include 80 teams, it's somehow supposed to mean something that they're going bowling? That's right - in 2015 there will be 40 bowl games played, meaning that 2/3 of the college football FCS teams will be "bowl" teams. Congrats.

As recently as 1995 there were just 18 bowl games. Back then, you could look at those teams and say without a doubt that those teams were solid. Their records reflected that and they were among the top 25% of teams in the nation. The catastrophe that was the BCS took us to 35 bowl games in just 16 years :snoop:

The one thing that I really like about a new playoff system is that it further de-emphasizes the significance of these shytty games.

/end rant

Bowls are now meaningless except for the $$$ they generate for the athletic departments.

Bowl game = more full practice. The more practice Texas gets with Charlie Strong, the better and becoming bowl eligible means precisely that. Colleges get very little practice with the organization of coaches and no pressure to win, which is just plain valuable in football. Short spring, short fall camp and bowl game if you are lucky. Texas could be looking at a month of extra practice. The more time the team seems to spend with this staff the better next season will be.

City of Angels :blessed:
it's a big deal for the players cause they get..

1.) more national exposure to help their draft stock

2.) to play in a stadium they've probably never played in, against a team they've probably never played

3.) a bag full of free "swag" and gifts

:comeon:

all them bowl games do big numbers, and it's the end of the season so football fiends are always watching getting their last fix of football.

and again, scouts are watching. it's a huge opportunity to boost your draft stock
I get all that. I'm not annoyed from the perspective of what the players get out of it. It's more about people putting stock into it as some sort of achievement. That's all i'm saying.
